NTLM, NTLMv2, lmcompatibilitylevel >=2 doesnt work
Hi, I'm wondering if samba supports NTLMv2, particullary NTLMv2 session security. But I can't even get NTLM-only to work :(. I'm trying to increase lmcompatibilitylevel, but I can't connect to the samba server anymore when I set it to 2 or higher ("Send NTLM authenication only"). I'm using HEAD CVS of today, and my smb.conf looks like this: [global] workgroup = WORKGROUP server string = Blablabla interfaces = 192.168.5.0/...

Hello experts/users, We have a samba server in ubuntu 18.04 LTS with version. apt-cache policy samba samba: Installed: 2:4.7.6+dfsg~ubuntu-0ubuntu2.16 Candidate: 2:4.7.6+dfsg~ubuntu-0ubuntu2.16 All is fine and great. Now go to the Win 7 machine and open the registry editor. Navigate to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\control\LSA. Click on LSA You should see LMCompatibilityLevel in the right window pane, if you don't: choose 'Edit' > New > REG_DWORD. Replace "New Value #1" with "LMCompatibilityLevel". Double-click on LMCompatibilityLevel in the right window pane. Enter "5" You should now be using NTLMv2 everywhere. At th...

Stumbling blocks moving to NTLMv2
...work - users could log in and doing a tcpdump showed that the dialogue was different with NTLMSSP appearing. There was a problem though: Citrix users got locking out, so I changed a registry setting on all Windows PCs and the Citrix server: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\lmcompatibilitylevel was set to 3 and the Citrix machine rebooted. We found that it didn't help with the citrix problem so we reverted the samba change. All back to normal - Citrix users are happy. Later, we found that some new Laptops couldn't join the domain - reverting the samba change made that work too....

Windows XP issues
Thanks Andrew for the answer. But even if I enable Windows XP to use NTLMv2 (using Regedit on (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CURRENTCONTROLSET/CONTROL/LSA LMCOMPATIBILITYLEVEL to 5) and adding "ntlm auth = ntlmv1-permitted" to my smb.conf Still the same error. (No *more connections can* be *made* to this remote computer at this time) in versions higher than 4.10. Any ideas? Best Regards Juan Franco. R: Security warning with XP clients and 3.0.2a PDC
...e very much appreciated. >> server signing = no >Try this as yes. How did you get it work? I've tried the "server signing = yes or auto", but it didn't work. Could you kindly tell us how to set the XP to get it work? I have tried the register for lsa parameter "lmcompatibilitylevel" and netlogon key "lmworkstation", but nothing changed! Thanks in advance. Samba 3 and NTLMv2 support
...omain PDC and I am looking to have clients attach to it NTLMv2 only. After looking over the man page for smb.conf, I have set the two options that I thought would accomplish: [Global] lanman auth = no ntlm auth = no On the workstation side, I have set HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\lmcompatibilitylevel to "5". When I try to join the clients to the domain, I get the error: "Logon Failure: Unknown Username or Bad Password" If I change the line, in smb.conf, for ntlm auth to "yes" and set the client registry key to "2" then I have no problem. NTLMv1 seem...

Samba4 server is not accessible for logon from Windows 2008R2 SP1.
I discovered the situation. When attempting to logon from Windows 2008R2 to Samba4 is made we can see in Samba smbd log the following important for understanding the situation lines: [2017/11/20 13:25:52.040094, 2, pid=7100, effective(0, 0), real(0, 0)] ../libcli/auth/ntlm_check.c:430(ntlm_password_check) ntlm_password_check: NTLMv1 passwords NOT PERMITTED for user <username> [2017/11/20

Samba domain join issues
...a bad password. I see an event logged 4625 with unknown username or bad password. Samba version is 3.6.4 and active directory is running on both 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 OS (with DFL/FFL as 2008 R2). I have tried with both versions of domain controllers without any success. I have also tried changing LmCompatibilityLevel on domain controllers from 0 till 5 but issue still persist. We initially thought this is because of MS16-077 patch but we uninstalled it from all our 2008 R2 domain controllers and 2012 R2 domain didn't have this patch at all. An example of our smb.conf file is here: [global] workgro...

Using rpcclient or samedit to randomise trust account passwords
...f you recall my previous posting, when using NTLMv1, this is MD4(NT#), which is MD4(MD4(Unicode(plaintext password))). You SHOULD, therefore, either: - add "client ntlmv2 = yes" to the smb.conf file used by rpcclient and samedit. The default is /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf. Set "LmCompatibilityLevel=0x4 or 0x5" on the PDC, and "LmCompatibilityLevel=0x2 or 0x3" on the workstations. See previous posting to NTBUGTRAQ for details and warnings about doing this. - after ANY usage of an administrator account to either change a user's password or create account using SRVMGR.EXE or...

SAMBA 2.2.7a and Windows XP
...9;t work (I suppose it has to do with my ISP has blocked port 139, to prevent people from accessing eachothers shares across apartments) I've tried to remove the external TP-connection, but to no avail. I really believe that it has to do with Windows XP. Someone told me it had to do with LmCompatibilityLevel... but I cannot draw any conclusions there either. I've really tried to find a solution, but I just can't do it. I really need some help here =( fisk@enquilon.lir.dk <for direct e-mail>

Signatures in Samba with windows XP
...r signing = auto or Yes" in smb.conf, the Windows XP clients can no longer connect to the samba (3.0.2), the "net use \\server\ipc$ /u:user password" return error 64. If I disabled the "server signing" the connection went ok. I've also checked register setting on XP (LMcompatibilityLevel, enablesignatures etc..) but no progress was made. The "server signing = auto" will make the samba to send the "security mode = 0x7" in netgotiate protocol response, that means "security =user" and "security signatures enabled" (not mandatory). So I can...

NT MD4 password encryption question
Are there multiple ways that Windows clients encrypt passwords? I'm seeing different behavior between two clients. On one, I can access a Samba share just fine. On the other, using the same username and password to access the same share, I get "incorrect password." Looking for the difference in Samba debug traces, I find it comes down to this: smb_password_ok: Checking SMB

I've compared the machine password values on both LDAP servers - they are same and synchronization is working fine.
