Putting /etc in cvs
Hi,
I'd like to put my servers' config files in cvs to make it easier to
manage (yes, I know about Cfengine). I've been looking for a tutorial
and I could find any, and since I'm not a CVS guru, I tried a few
things, without even knowing if I'm doing it right.
Any hints?
Regards,

Filename for printing?
Hi, all. I'm trying to create a PDF queue... or, rather, I already have a
homebrew solution I hacked together with an lprng filter, and it doesn't
work too well. The solution at www.linuxgazette.com/issue72/bright.html,
which uses the smb.conf and "print command" paramaters, appears to be much
more elegant, but has one major shortfall: I don't see any way to get the
filename of the file I'm printing. The jobname gives me:
For websites: the URL (which is great)

PDF Printer issue
Hello Everyone,
I have a slight issue with configuring a PDF printer on my Samba
servers. I have input the following into my smb.conf file and it does
create the printer as well as work to create PDF files, except that it
only functions when "printing" to that printer via Excel 2002. If I
attempt it with anything else, even the Windows Test print, it fails.
Now, in the Windows

Recommended FS for Dovecot Maildir
Hi,
I've heard that for Dovecot/Mailir systems there are filesystems that
are optimised for the situation of many small files in one folder.
Could I possibly have some feedback on what the recommended filesystems
are? I've heard of ReiserFS but was wondering what other options there
are and how they compare.
If I get a good comprehensive response I'll build a wiki summary page

FreeNX authenticates but no desktop on centos 5 ??
...wo nxserver machines have stable IP addresses, I have root access. the
nxclient machine is a mac G4 PPC (which presumably makes no difference at
all), with very recent download of the mac OS X client from nomachine.
I followed the instructions for setting up freenx on centos 4.4 found here:
http://linuxgazette.net/135/knaggs.html
and it worked perfectly the first time I tried. the key steps were

Automatically creating home directories?
Hello to all.
I want to use winbind to automatically create email accounts. I've added
several linux boxes to our win2k3 AD and working pretty well (more in a new
post about this). When I create a new user on the win2k3 box, users can
access various shares on the linux boxes, as it should be. I also have a
sendmail server sitting in a DMZ. I have to create the email user account on

Hallo Andrew,

list), I'm working on a fax server based on the original implamentation of
Pedro Fraile you can read all the particular here:
http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue79/fraile.html
The goal of "my" fax server implementation:
Users authentication via samba/winbind/pam
Automatic creation of the mailbox for the users of the domain (only for
internal use with smbfax... because for corporete directive I can't connect
sendmail to our exchange...

Printing with CUPS and PDF
..."print command":
"With printing = cups, and if SAMBA is compiled against libcups, any
manually set print command will be ignored."
My PDF printer relies on a print command field (print command =
/usr/bin/printpdf %s) as recommended in the PDF printer howto here:
http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue72/bright.html
So is it possible to use CUPS and a "print command" in the same Samba
server? Why are print commands ignored anyway? Thanks in advance for any
responses.

KPPP: why root?
Hi All,
I'm wondering about something that seems a bit odd. I've setup a CentOS
4 box for a client that is "still" using dial-up and to activate the
connection appears to require root privileges. Why is this?
The reason Linux was loaded on this box was to provide a very functional
box that could be easily locked down so when the cat was away the mice
couldn't play,

confession
Gang,
I've got to admit, what really sold me on debian was apt-get. And
I've been resisting getting up to speed with yum. So, can any of ya
point me to a good starter page, maybe one with migrators like me in
mind? Many thanks.

PDF printer and wiidows driver auto-download.
Hello =)
I got some problem configuring a pdf printer and make windows
to download automagically drivers from [print$] share on my
samba 3.0.1 server.
Well, I've configured a pdf printer (based on this doc:
http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue72/bright.html), tested it
and it works pretty well =)
To install the printer on windows side, I connect to the host,
browse to samba server, right-click on the printer and select
"connect". Windows then ask me to install appropriate drivers.
I choose postscript drivers and inst...

Using voice modem as poor man's FXO in Asterisk 1.8
Hi all,
I've tried researching this, and so far, have struggled to find any
contemporary information on the issue, so I do apologise if asking this
irritates people who have answered this before.
I have managed to set up Asterisk 1.8 on the web server here. I have
two softphones (Ekiga) able to communicate with it. So far so good.
I'm now curious to see if I can link it with the PSTN
