rsync over ssh - lockups with pipe()
For a couple of years people have been reporting intermittent problems with rsync over ssh freezing during a large transfer (typically several GB). I have now gotten to the bottom of these problems, and have written a small test program which demonstrates a deadlock in sshd when doing large bi-directional transfers. Luckily the problem is easily solved by modifying sshd to use socketpair() instead

RedHat 7.0 on Dell Poweredge 6300
I went to RedHats' page and found hardware requirements and it said that the Dell Poweredge 6300 is a supported hardware. Then I went to linuxcare.com and it does not list the machine. Before I look like a buffoon, or continue to, Redhat will run on this machine, right? I appreciate the help. slow slow slow
I find apps running in wine are unbearably slow. In particular - HTML-Kit by Chami. I really like this editor on NT at work, I want to use it at home on my FreeBSD box. It works in wine, just very very slowly. I do not have a windows partition. I'm running wine by itself. Any suggestions on ways to get speedier results? -- Chip

'path' entry and printing in smb.conf
Hi, Do I actually need a 'path' entry for each printer share defined in my smb.conf? Or is 'path' redundant in this case as the only relevance it has would be for the printing spool directory, which is defined by my /etc/printcap for all my printers anyway?? The man page for smb.conf seems to suggest that I do need a path entry, so should this be the same as the spool directory

Samba 1 vs. 2, locking and Windows Terminal Server Edition
On Samba 1.9.18p10 and previous versions, each of the multiple users on the same Windows Terminal Server Edition machine would get their own smbd process. With Samba 2.0.x (I'm currently testing 2.0.4b), this has changed so that every user on a WTSE machine uses the same smbd process. File ownerships are assigned correctly, but file locking does not work. If one user on a WTSE machine has a

ip address of samba.org has changed
...moved and has a new IP address. You may find that some services are inaccessible until your local name server fetches the updated records. That should happen fairlly quickly, but please be patient. This affects the machines samba.org, cvs.samba.org and all email. The machine is now located in the Linuxcare offices in Canberra, Australia. It was located at the Australian National University. I'd like to thank ANU for hosting samba.org for so many years, the ANU administrators have been very tolerant of what was a large load on their network. Note that most of the high bandwidth services for samb...

Regression stars
Today's GNU R tutorial in http://how-to.linuxcareer.com/a-quick-gnu-r-tutorial-to-statistical-models-and-graphics points out how bad statistical practice is being further perpetuated, by virtue of "significance stars" still being the default in printed output from lm models. ----- Frank Harrell Department of Biostatistics, Vanderbil...

IP addressing migration
Hi, I am changing the IP addressing in my centOS server which works as mail server. The question I have is, if I define the new IP addresses (sub-interfaces) on the server, can I work with both ranges at the same time despite I have only one default gateway configured? (on the old range) Or may I have two default gateways in centOS? --Ivan.

Problem deleting an active route
Hi all, Some how I have an extra active route setup in my CentOS 4.4 system (that unfortunately at a data center a ways away from me). I have tried using /sbin/route del -net xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx but get an error. I also have Webmin installed and I can delete the route from there, but on applying the network config, the route comes back. I have no idea where it is coming from. It is preventing me

ppp 2.4.1 pppoatm plugin. Here is a port of a previous version
Dear all I have ported the pppoatm.c plugin for ppp version 2.3.x to the 2.4.1 ppp. I am however having problems to decide what is the right place where to send it. I did look at http://www.samba.org/ppp and this seems to be the home page for ppp Then I did look for a mailing list the only one I have found is majordomo@vger.kernel.org but I really don't know if that is official for ppp

Nbfw, Cross-subnet browsing
Hi, I'm currently using the nbfw (netbios forwarder - http://nbfw.sourceforge.net/) patch with samba on a linux masquerading firewall/router. It works pretty well. I was wondering if there was plan to include this patch in samba (or TNG) I was also wondering if there was any way to use this as a mean to do cross-subnet browsing efficient. The paradox is that browsing works better between a

TDB file format???
Hi. I want to use NT usernames / passwords from my PDC for loging in my server. I also want to use NFS between various UNIX machines I have. The problem is that I already have a database of username <-> UID maping (each user that has an NT username got an unique UID when he got a username). Now I want to translate this my UID database into winbindd UID tdb database, however I don't know
