Really small Linux and NAS
I have a really nice, old Libretto 110. Only 64Mb memory.
I want to put Linux on it and have a network monitoring system and a
traveling NAS.
But all of the NASs have seemed to have grown beyond their original 64Mb
size (FreeNAS now needs 128Mb).
Only thing I have found is:

performance considerations
greets . . .
i'm setting up a linux system on a little toshiba libretto -- p-166,
64 megs, plenty of disk space, though -- and i'm wondering as to the
performance effects were i to apply ext3. i presume that keeping the
journal consumes some finite amount of resources; what i don't know
is whether this is repaid or more than repaid in some other way.

compilation of 0.62.4
...39;
system.c:154: `readMask' undeclared (first use in this function)
On the Alpha it compiles OK, but dumps core during initialization (I may
not have g77 installed right becuase I still get errors with g77 -v).
Has anyone experience with these two operating systems? I access R on my
Toshiba libretto running linux with the display set to my 'other'
workstation, but I think it should run on at least one of these other
machines.

ISO burning challenge -- pilgrims progress
First the Storix drive works just fine under DSL 4.2.1 on my Libretto.
So the drive is fine, the media is fine. And cdrecord on DSL reports
the media to be

Firewall frustration
Well FWbuilder is NOT easy. The documentation does not match the
current GUI. Now the box is locked up. I will have to pull it again,
hook it up to a kybd/VGA and reset iptables....
Maybe Shoreline with webmin....
Problem is I want a REAL router/firewall with little work. Both public
and private nets have routable addresses. No NATing for me! I just
help write the RFC ;) And all the

Trying to understand Remote desktops
...So in theory, all I would need to have on the Centos Apps
server is the X and Gnome client parts and some remote server (like XRDP)?
I have the test box sitting here, ready to run an install....
I think it would be so cool, to see my Gnome desktop from the apps
server running on my little old Libretto running DSL.

Live CD Planning systems
My company supplies me with a very nice HP nc2400. Much faster, more
memory, etc than my old HP nc4010.
Problem is the drive is not swappable, and they encrypt the drive (the
OS is XP).
The nc2400 has a DVD/CDRW and 2 USB 2.0 ports so I was thinking.....
Make a Live DVD with everything I need but map
/etc /root /home and /var/log (and what else?) to a USB flash drive

Far cheaper than a new UPS would be a 2nd hand old small PC with ethernet;
then run NUT over ethernet to modern PC
You can get old PCs that are book sized. & libretto sized too, etc.

f2c and OSF
Hello,
I take it all back. I just tried to comple 0.90.1 on my alpha (with f2c)
and it didn't work. I'll look into it when I find time (I STILL usually
run on my libretto and linux, even through my RS6000 workstation).

MOre on buring ISOs
So right now I have installed k3b on this notebook. I am using my Storix
DVD/CDRW usb drive. I can read cds with it.
Cannot burn CDs. First k3b suggests slowing down (from 8x to 4x). Then
use TAO. Then it gave up.
So I try cdrecord directly. -checkdrive finds some interesting things.
Got to close the drive manually; cdrecord says it can't. then try a
cdrecord -v dev=dev/scd0 sample.iso
