OT hardware question
...ontinuing annoyance from motion, my manager's asked me to go looking again for a video surveillance appliance: basically, a motion-detecting DVR and cameras. The big thing, of course, is a) price (this is a US federal gov't agency, and being civilian, money is *tight*, don't give me the libertarian/GOP line about how freely we spend, thankyouverymuch), b) it has to be on the network, and c) we need to be able to d/l to a server, and rm after we do that... and we want to script or cron job that. Interesting exercises might include tabulating the marginal totals and determining if Democrats or Republicans vote earlier or later. The analogy would only work if computing was customarily blackbox technology, which it isn't. Well, I do generally take a libertarian stance on things, but there is a limit on fobbing everything off on personal responsibility. Society should be able to impose a certain level of sensible limits on some things. CentOS is our society in this context. It is the group we choose to be a member of, which sets the ground rules and pro...

Primer for working with survey data in R
I am taking a behavioral stats graduate class and the instructor is using SPSS. I'm trying to follow along in R. Recently in class we started working with scales and survey data, computing Cronbach's Alpha, reversing values for reverse coded items, etc. Also, SPSS has some built in functionality for entering the meta-data for your survey, e.g. the possible values for items, the text of
