Total official discretion is retained: The legislation will provide that bodies wishing to offer or provide encryption services to the public in the UK will be required to obtain a licence. The legislation will give the Secretary of State discretion to determine appropriate licence conditions. The licence conditions imply that only l...

...and any consulting firm that does security assessment of commercial software. In addition, you will not be able to "quote" information from the Internet without written permission. For example, I lifted the bulk of this text from www.l0pht.com and re-edited it -- and under this proposed legislation this would be illegal without getting written permission. Reporters would be unable to "lift" quotes, students would be unable to "lift" research material, and you would be unable to "lift" security info for detailed reports without gaining the author's permission....

...out to purchase a DID this morning... but when I went to get it.... voxbone wanted the end user's address information. So I started to put it in... unfortunately... the end-user is in the U.S....but the only options are for a few select cities in GERMANY! I don't understand. Is there some legislation that says German DIDs can't be exported?

...y possible clients. More troubling is the possibility that Caller ID may be used to trick unsuspecting call recipients into certain actions or beliefs, and it is this concern that's currently creating a legislative threat I believe must be averted. ... Congress is currently considering legislation titled The Truth in Caller ID Act, which certainly sounds noble. Who doesn't want correct Caller ID when receiving a call? The truth is that this bill is redundant--the Wire Fraud Act already covers this issue, and adding more wording seems to be merely a re-statement of a certain circumst...

And when patients return to the community there is no requirement for neighbours or victims to be notified. Is this legislation enlightened or are we just suckers, falling for time and money-saving strategies? OT: Please comment on Dvorak's troll
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1812887,00.asp Specifically, his assertion that ISP's would sniff traffic and block, say, the SIP port. You could play wack-a-mole with port numbers, no? Also a community based, Freenet style of encryption implementation for "free" VoIP traffic would address this issue. I raise this to the list because I'm sure there's a grain of
