NYC Puppet Meetup
Hi All, We are wanting to having a Puppet Meetup in NYC on February 3th, 2009, 6:30 PM. Place to be determined. Baring that my wife doesn''t give birth by then (which would prevent me from making it) how does this sound to everyone else? Brian G., Can you rally up the troops and also invite people from other groups? Also let''s have some specific topics to discuss.

Question: Do all puppetd run at the same time?
(I know more questions... :-)) I know the default for puppetd is to check puppetmasterd every half hour, but my question does each puppetd check at the same time? Or does it depend when puppetd is started or like a cronjob does it run at the 1/2 hour and hour mark? Is there some randomness to the times they run? My point is if they all run at the same time then if you have a large amount of

Puppet Class execution order
For the life of me I''m not sure why this isn''t working properly but Puppet appears to execute classes in the order it feels like, not how I''m specifying it within the language. I''ve tried the newer sytax Class[''one''] -> Class[''two''] Yet, I see Class two get executed first. I''ve also tried doing it by defining

Using checkpassword to block ips?
Hi new to the list, but we are a long time user of Dovecot via DirectAdmin control panel. We, like everyone else, are seeing an increase in dictionary attacks of POP/IMAP. We want to block them. I've searched the mailing list and found a few recommended fail2ban, which really won't work for our case. We need to do this over many machines and not one or two. We also like to gather

Stoking a Religious War: Why Did You Go With Puppet Over Other Options?
Hi, Gang.. The Subject: line says it all. My organisation is looking at selecting a configuration management system. Any comments about why you chose Puppet over other options would be very helpful to us. Official puppetlabs position on cron vs puppet as a service?
Over the years many shops have come to start running puppet via cron to address memory leaks in earlier versions of Ruby, but the official position was that puppet was meant to be run as a continually running service. I am wondering if the official position has changed. On one hand many if not all of the early Ruby issues have been fixed, on the other, the addition of mcollective into the mix as

how to handle a random password in a config file?
Hi I''m trying to configure bacula''s config file. The issue is everytime the script runs a new key gets generated for bacula. How can I have the config file update only run once with puppet, yet replace the default bacula-fd.conf file. script listed below: class bacula-client { # define which server to use case $datacenter { 1: { $backupserver

puppetd daemon vs. cron
Hi, I''m running multiple vservers and have some aspects managed via puppet. I noticed that puppetd consumes from 20 to 60 mb RAM and the longer the process runs, the more RAM it takes. It looks like 60MB is the top what I measured. Having a couple of vservers (11 in my case) this can already take up to 500MB just for puppet! I''m wondering if there''s any downside in

using puppetmaster with SSL/TLS LDAP server?
It says in the puppetmaster configuration: # Whether SSL should be used when searching for nodes. # Defaults to false because SSL usually requires certificates # to be set up on the client side. # ldapssl = false Where do the certificates get places? --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups

How do you handle deleted nodes with exported resources in this situation?
I have an issue where for a file type of an exported resource I must define as such: force => false, replace => false, Meaning the file is created, but do not replace after it''s added. I do this because of the app modifies the config file after (I know bad idea on their part). How can I ensure this file is removed when I remove the node from

problem with package function and removing rpms
I have a recipe that I''m ensuring that I remove rpms that may be installed by CentOS/RHEL before I install the MySQL.com rpms. the recipe and logs are listed below. For testing I have mysql-* rpms already installed. Is there a method to force specific order to run the recipe? What am I doing wrong? # install mysql rpms (not CentOS/RHEL vesions) # PROCESS: # - removes any CentOS/RHEL
