Update: In fact i succeeded in reseting user password from a linux
workstation with kpasswd through pam_sssd.
At the beginning I thought we were prompted directly for new password,
but we had to first type in the old one before choosing a new one.

Yep I allready tried it, it ends with "kpasswd preauthentication failed

I must precise we use pam_sssd against Samba4/AD to authenticate.
Here is my /etc/sssd/sssd.conf:

Sync password (with MIT-kerberos server) and migration
...Kerberos database. When user from Windows
want to change his password, samba will use a custom script (not created yet
) to also so update the Kerberos password (if you have examples they're more

But the big problem is Linux users : If they want to update they password,
they use kpasswd but it will not update samba password.
Is one of you manage to create a script to update both DB form command line
? I not a kerberos/samba expert but I suppose it's possible to change samba
password form linux command linux and then call the kerberos kpasswd to also
change this password. Then...

In this thread I've been given 3 more ideas on how to do this:
samba-tool -U <myuser> user password
smbpasswd

I'll try each and see which works best for me.

I have looked at the actual /usr/lib/firewalld/services xml files and
find that I should use:
samba kerberos kpasswd dns ldap ldaps
And need to create services for tcp ports 135 (rpc) and 3268 (MS Global
Catalog), or just do those as ports.
Still to be worked out are:
what about ldap and ldaps over udp? And do I need a rule for port 1024?

How do I allow users to change their own passwords on GNU/Linux?
How do I configure my GNU/Linux system to allow users to change their
own password?
When I type in the passwd command as a domain user it prompts to change
the kerberos password but doesn't allow them to change it. I get an
error that say password changes may not permitted on this account.

[Bug 819] patch to add kerberos password-changing

Platform: UltraSparc
OS/Version: Solaris
Status: NEW
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: Kerberos support
AssignedTo: openssh-bugs at mindrot.org
ReportedBy: buckh at pobox.com
here's a patch that invokes kpasswd in the event the KDC fails to authenticate
a user's kerberos-5 password b/c it's expired: it attempts to get a ticket for
kadmin/changepw and, if that works, dumps the user into kpasswd instead of
passwd

Resetting a User Password From S3 or S4 Member Server
...owing the current password? I was able to do this with S3, though it was
not truly a "member" server - I configured the server in question to have
direct access to OpenLDAP in smb.conf. I have a member server joined to my
S4 domain and a user can change his or her own password via passwd, kpasswd
or smbpasswd, however I would like to have the ability to reset a user's
forgotten password from this server myself.
Thanks,

Typing the right password. The password is still the old one and expired.
The password doesn't even change when using kpasswd.
Any ideas what I can do?
Best regards,

When the users password expires it must be changed (hint, hint) ;-)
Or an even bigger hint, the user needs to change their password before
the 27th of June

I have no real idea, but it might have something to do with neither of
having anything to do with AD.

What does "klist" say? And can you run "kinit" to ensure you have a
valid ticket? One of my favorite failures is when the time settings
between the local host, and the Samba or AD server, have drifted from

Allow self password change using LDAP(s) with Samba4
Hi all
I am trying to create a webapp to allow users to change their own passwords
in Samba4 (perhaps, also in AD), using LDAP(s). But when I try to modify
the user password using this code:
dn: ........
changetype: modify
replace: unicodePwd
unicodePwd: "Temporal2"
I get this error:

Unable to join domain when DC firewall is active
...n the domain controller, initially I only had firewall-cmd --permanent
--add-service=samba but that didn't work. The computer couldn't join but
when I turned off the firewall all-together I was able to join.
I then tried firewall-cmd --permanent
--add-service={samba,dns,ldap,ldaps,kerberos,kpasswd} but that didn't work
either.
Are there some other services and/or ports I need to open?
I've also tried firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port={137,138,139,445}/tcp
and firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port={137,138,139,445}/udp just to see
if it would work but it didn't.
