File transfer speed issue
Hi all,
I have aproblem with Samba copying (unfortunatly I'm new to samba so my
skills are fairly limited).
I have a sun box (solaris 8) with samba 2.2.2.
Copying from sun to a nt server is fast (as good as you would expect)
however, copying from the nt server to the sun box is slow (files copy
normally, then slow to a complete halt then copy very slowly).
We cannot see anything on a

Controlling share create permissions
Is it possible to set default create permissions on certain directories
within a share? ie. Create files in the share [something] /folder1/ as 744
but in /folder1/subfolder/ as 777. I thought of creating two shares and
having the users manually go into the other share to save thier files, but
confusion ensued. Thanks for any help!

Newbie (groan... !) Client Problem
I've studied the books, searched the list archives, etc. I suspect there is
someone who can just tell me one thing to tweek, so I humbly beg your
advice.
Situation:
I am playing with/learning Linux, intending to replace our two company
Netware servers sometime in the next 6 months. At home, I have an NT4.0/SPC
PDC, an NT4.0/SP6 docked laptop, and an HP server with RH7.1 or 7.2 (2.4.??

Linux as a workstation client
I'm exploring the idea of using Linux as a workstation OS for some of the
users where I work. Most of the issues I've looked at seem resolvable, but
I keep running into one sticking point. We rely heavily on shared folders
on our Samba server, using ACLs to restrict things on a departmental basis.
What I'd need is a way to mount these folders with the permissions of the

NTFS conversion?
Hello all,
I am looking for a way to move a massive amount of data from an NTFS
filesystem to an ext3 filesystem in order to move a samba box in to replace
a win2K server. If anyone has any ideas or pointers, or links to follow, I
would appreciate it. This is the first step, after this I get to figure out
how to incorporate this into an EMC SAN. Whoopeee!!!!
Thanks,

Power outage and now cannot connect
Hi all,
We've just had a power outage and the pc's can now no longer connect to the
server. The server had power backup and did not go down which seems strange.
Now when I try to connect the error message in smbd.log is
smbd/connection.c:yield_connection(62)
yield_connection: tdb_delete failed with error Record does not exist.
and on the workstation it denies access citing security

bug, smb 2.2.1a, redhat 7.2
i am not sure whether this is by default or not, but i think i found a tiny bug. (maybe by design, i am not a samba guru)
Steps to reproduce:
Create a loopback device without asigning an ip to it.
(not sure whether it is also reproducable without the loopback device at all)
set in smb.conf:
bind interfaces only = yes
interfaces = yourip
According to what i could find in the docs it should now

log in script question
All,
I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction in obtaining
a solution to the the following; I want to have the log in script map
not only their home directory, but also the group folders as well. For
instance, I would have a share with valid users=@usergroup and would
want the script to map the directory based on this criteria. Would I
have to have a log on script for each

Act! database on a Samba server
Does anyone have experience with getting an Act! database working
without corruption on a Samba server? I had five users in an Act!
database where I was getting pretty regular corruption, even after
adding "oplocks = no" to the share. We have since moved the database
onto a Win 2000 machine, but we would rather have it back on the Samba
server if we can solve the corruption problem. Any

running .exe files from a Unix share without specifying .exe extension - is it possible ??
Hi gurus,
I have mapped drive V:\ on my win2k pro from a SAMBA share on a
Sparc/Solaris 2.8.
When I cd to v:\ and type the filename without specifying .exe after it, the
system cannot find it.
If I map V:\ from another share, this time a windows machine, this works
great. On local drives as well - windows assumes .exe extension and calls
the file.
This is not a path problem, as the executable

File being modified---win2k and solaris8
I have been working with Samba 2.2.0 on Solaris 8 and have hit a major
problem when users accessing files from the server.
A 'FILE RESERVATION' warning pops---in Windows 2000--up with an error saying
that the "File.xyz is being modified by USER---where user is the last person
to have opened the file---usually the same person opening it.
I have tried turning of oplocks and kernel

Samba suddenly going nuts!
Hello,
we're running 2.2.1a on a production server. Lately, it's been giving
us troubles. Monday mordning, this moring, and 2 times more during
today, samba stopped responding to all requests from Windows (2000)
clients. This has happened once before a week ago, and once several
weeks ago. Today it seems to be getting much worse.
If left un-attended the system will eventually run out of

That issue is: network connectivity. If I
