mozilla bug?
I had an embarrassing experience today, attempting to demonstrate that with gmail one can use the web interface when he must or use the pop/smtp interface or use both at the same time. The web interface would not work with mozilla-1.7.12-1.4.1.centos4. A quick check showed that firefox-1.0.7-1.4.1.centos4 has the same symptom -- that is, displays a page containing nothing but

Setting CDROM parms
My apologies in advance for asking such an elementary question. I called myself searching the Installation Guide and Deployment Guide, with no success. The situation is that I bought a Lite-On ATAPI iHAP122 that will not burn DVDs unless I use hdparm to turn dma off. I bought that drive because it was a rare beige drive. Until I can find a decent DVD burner and/or get a Windows machine put

Message display
Is there a command in CentOS4 or some small program to display a short message everywhere possible on a box much like # shutdown -k now "Display me where I'll be seen", but without the added (normal) stuff? xmessage would probably be usable if it had an -onalldesktops option. BTW, the purpose is to add a visual to the scripts I have in place to remind me to connect my external

Lightscribe
I just bought an HP DVD Writer 1040r (as identified by k3b), an external USB-connected CD/DVD burner. The drive gets assigned /dev/scd0. I can burn CDs and DVDs, read from CDs and DVDs, boot from DVDs (and, I assume, CDs) but have been unable to use the lightscribe software to label a disk. I have lightscribe-1.18.11.1-0 and lightscribeApplications-1.18.6.1-0 installed, can run the GUI at

Can't print PDFs or PSs in CentOS 5.0
For some reason, when I try to print any graphic PDF (or a PS file made from said graphic), it kills my Minolta 1100 laser printer, and I have to cancel the job, disable the printer and turn the printer off and on as many times as it takes to clear its buffer of the trash. I'm running CentOS 5.0 and have tried Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 for Linux; I have also tried printing the pdf to a file

ATI, Catalyst and a new kernel
Please bear with me for a really stupid question... I have a Radeon HD 4550 video card and currently run the Catalyst driver, fglrx_6_9_0-8.741-1. I use the "package managed" method for installing, allowing me keep track of what's what: [rj at madeleine ~]$ su Password: [root at madeleine rj]# grep fglrx /var/log/yum* /var/log/yum.log:May 20 12:37:07 Updated:

SysVinit guidance, please
I have experienced a couple of power failures since installing CentOS 5, both while I was working on the system. The first time, several weeks ago, I thought there was some "feature" that I had never seen before but couldn't really put my finger on it. The power came back on after a few seconds and I never missed a beat. I also shrewdly forgot about the anomaly that I had

CentOS 5 and seamonkey
Has anyone had any success in rebuilding seamonkey 2.0.4 for CentOS 5 (32-bit)? I'm currently running seamonkey-2.0-1 which I rebuilt last November. Sadly, I have no idea where the SRPM originated. I found seamonkey-2.0.4-1.fc12.src.rpm and seamonkey-2.0.4-1.fc12.src.rpm, downloaded and got to 0th base: [rj at madeleine Downloads]$ rpmbuild --rebuild

OT -- apcupsd messages
Does anyone here have any "feel" for the "Battery disconnected" and "Battery reattached" log entries? The rebooting came as a result of me turning off modems, router, external drives, monitor, cordless phone and finally, the computer, trying to locate a quiet but annoying "chirp". The "chirps" stopped when I tilted the UPS to look at the front

New Standard/Daylight time-change dates in rhel4u2 but not centos4.2?

Problems reading a backup data DVD
I wrote a bunch of files to a backup DVD about two months ago and now neither of my drives will read it. I get mount errors from "not a directory" to something like "unrecognized file system type" and so on, usually after a really long wait and a notice about how the drive is write-protected (duh). Here's what happened most recently: # mount /dev/hdc /mnt mount: block

OT ? Shell script
Does anyone have an elegant solution for finding the date of the 3rd Monday each month and the date of the Sunday preceding? (Sunday shouldn't be beyond my capabilities, once the Monday part is worked out.) For the past several years, I've been handling the chore using a file with a manually input list of dates -- which is about as elegant as driving a tack with a sledge hammer.

More YUM and logwatch
I looked in the Fedora list archives and found several references to logwatch not working right in FC3. (FC1 & FC2 were O.K.) This post is definitive: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=fedora-list&m=111294403802213&w=2

Flashplayer-plugin
I know that flashplayer-plugin is not packaged or distributed by CentOS but there's a RedHat "Critical" advisory at https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2005-835.html that I don't believe has been mentioned here. There is no CentOS rpm that I can find but the binary of version 7.0.61 is available from

HPLIP
First, has anyone successfully installed the HPLIP driver from HP in CentOS4? Second, does that driver really provide the toolbox which includes handy stuff like ink level monitoring? I got the source RPM (hplip-0.9.4-1.1.src.rpm) from an FC4 testing mirror, which rebuilt fine on this machine: . . . + umask 022 + cd /home/rj/rpmbuild/BUILD + cd

CentOS 4 and OpenOffice
Has anyone here replaced the openoffice.org packages with those that were distributed with FC3? It's either that for me or simply scrapping CentOS in favor of FC3 (or even FC1). I'm very surprised that I can find no reports regarding the impossibility of formatting multi-page spreadsheets to print properly.
