reproduced on two machines ( so different hardware involved on this one
software md raid on SATA, on second one areca hardware raid card )
but the 2 machines are the one sharing this partition ( so share the
same data )

Yes, ssh works just fine.? Here's an example of it:
[dan at jupiter2 ~]$ mkdir test3
[dan at jupiter2 ~]$ cd test3
[dan at jupiter2 test3]$ cat > testing
Hello World!

[dan at jupiter2 test3]$ ls
testing
[dan at jupiter2 test3]$ cat testing

And samba works just fine as long as BOTH user and group permissions

can't create directories/files on network share

The file is there, and the unix permissions are 664. On a whim, I
deleted the file, and re-ran freshclam. Result was this:

Hm, samba 4.11.2-13 is running on CentOS? 8.
Im not really into CentOS/RH im more Debian/Ubuntu..
But I suggest you try this.
Remove [homes] ( or keep it but add a new one. )
Setup
[users]
Path = /home
browseable = yes
read only = no
Test again against that new share, but not with smbclient alone,
setup a cifs mount and test and/or use a windows client pc.
Preffered W10 or
