Installing Java using jpackage.org's java-*-sun-compat RPMs
As requested on IRC, this is my proposed walkthough for installing Java
on CentOS 4 using jpackage.org's compat-rpm method.
Please review and comment.
1. make sure jpackage-utils is installed
$ rpm -q jpackage-utils
jpackage-utils-1.7.3-1jpp.2.el5
if it isn't already installed, you can install it using
# yum install jpackage-utils
The package is part of CentOS, so you don't need t...

java-1.4.2-gcj-compat.i386 update failure
...ry way. I don't know if this is
related.
I have installed an rpm for a java needed by an application I run. It
was from the official java site. I don't know if this is related.
Here's what I know. Well, I think I know this.
/usr/bin/rebuild-security-providers seems to be missing from
jpackage-utils.noarch.
As I am frequently in error, I presume that I may have something
scrogged here. If so, cluebats cheerfully fielded.
If not, any help or ideas also gratefully accepted.

Jpackage tomcat55-common-lib requires eclipse-ecj >= 0:3.1.1
...rom http://ant.apache.org/
So far (see attached text file for rough documentation of build
sequence) I've built Java and JTA successfully. When I try to install
tomcat55 it results in...
"Error: Missing Dependency: eclipse-ecj >= 0:3.1.1 is needed by
package tomcat55-common-lib"
Jpackage 1.6 only has eclipse-3.0.2 as far as I can see. So, my
question, is there a preferred or authoratative source for
packaging/or a prepackaged Eclipse that'll fulfil my requirements?
I've searched around and found mention of Jason Corley 's SRPMs

JPackage, Java 1.5.0, and CentOS 5?
...it's *supposed* to be
an easy drop-in to a tomcat5 container. I suppose that it is, once I
figured out how to get tomcat 5 working in CentOS 5, but I'm still
having problems with the java.
CentOS comes with Java 1.4.2, but I need Java 1.5 in order to run
pebble. I've tried to use jpackage by downloading the jpackage.repo and
doing yum searches, but it looks like jpackage doesn't have RHEL 5 support.
I tried downloading and installing the SDK from Sun, but I must have
done that wrong because it broke a lot of other things.
Has anybody got any ideas?
Thanks!

Installing Freemind. It needs Java JRE.
So after lots of pain, and reading past messages, I got
jre-1_5_0_09-linux-i586.rpm from sun and installed it.
Then I tried to follow Jim Perrin's recommendation to install from
jpackage.org the java-1.5.0-sum-compat.rpm. Thing is it is complaining
about no JDK (not JRE!)
yum install java-1.5.0-sun-compat (have jpackage.org repo in yum.repo.d)

Trouble with centos4 and jpackage - trying to install tomcat5
I've followed the installation instructions from jpackage.org:
http://www.jpackage.org/installation.php
1) Install jpackage17.repo in yum.repos.d
2) Install jpackage-utils
3) Install jdk (I installed jdk 1.5.0_14)
4) Install -compat package (I installed java-1.5.0-sun-compat)

java yum problem
Error: Missing Dependency: /usr/bin/rebuild-security-providers is needed
by package java-1.4.2-gcj-compat
I'm digging all over the place for this one. Has anyone a clue?? When I
use:
yum whatprovides /usr/bin/rebuild-security-providers it returns:
jpackage-utils.noarch : JPackage utilities
I've installed this from several sources. Nothing seems to provide the
rebuild thing. I've used mc to looking inside the rpms I've found and
none have it. So, I would guess something else does. Thanks, Ric

java packages - tomcat5?
Have the jpackage-packaged things like tomcat5 been moved into the disto
repositories? Do they work with sun java? In particular, tomcat5 used
to require jta. The one yum installs doesn't mention it now, but it
also doesn't work with sun java 1.5 installed the jpackage way. What am
I missing?

GPL java
For the people who are currently interested in java as it relates to
centos now that Sun has GPL'd java there are some things to be aware
of.
The folks at jpackage.org are pretty much all over this development
but it's not the bright shiny news everyone has made it out to be. Sun
did a very good thing by moving java under the GPL, and they should be
commended for FINALLY seeing the light after the failure of the DLJ
license BUT:

Java
Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie to centos and having trouble upgrading java's jdk1.4 to jdk1.5.
I assume I have to get the jdk from jpackage, but I'm having trouble
locating it, let alone finding any instructions on how to upgrade. Much
appreciated if anyone can help. Thanks!

Sun Java module for RedHat
Hi.
I googled for this thoroughly but couldn''t find any module that
actually worked.
Is there any good puppet module or manifest for installing Sun JDK?
Thanks.
