String position character replacement
...odhowareyou"
[3] "goo-an-you"
[4] "yesi-----ijusttoldyou"
[5] "o-ye-t-atsr-ght"
Is there an easy way to do this? Or would the easiest way be writing a function to take substrings of the original vector and pasting in the replacement character?
Thanks in advance!

Major quality decrease in RC3 compared to RC2
...ools Debian
packages. After I discovered the quality decrease, I compiled the libraries
and vorbis-tools from source, both using gcc 2.95.4 and gcc 3.0.3, each of
which gave the same result: bad quality.
Here's the proof:
Original WAV-File (~5MB)

Same as FLAC-File (~3.5 MB)

And as MP3 with very high quality and bitrate (~1MB) - I think this is okay
for comparison so that you do not need to download one of the above

share name doesn't appear
hi all
I have compiled and running the latest samba (2.2.2) cause i need ldap authentication from samba. Things are working fine but when I browse the server from a windows client I just get the icons with no name of the shares displayed. Although I do get the share names if I try "smbclient -L srever".
Also I do not get the share name when I use " net view \\server ". Since

ZFS boot and data on same disk - is this supported?
I have read the ZFS best practice guide located at
http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/ZFS_Best_Practices_Guide
However I have questions whether we support using slices for data on the
same disk as we use for ZFS boot. What issues does this create if we
have a disk failure in a mirrored environment? Does anyone have examples
of customers doing this in production environments.

Getting to Mate or Xfce
My wife bought a new Thinkpad, on which we had the shop install
CentOS 7 (I *think* it's 7.3.) Alas!, I didn't think to specify NOT Gnome,
in thunder. So of course I got it.
I've tried several times to force myself to accommodate Gnome3,
always with no joy. How do I get Mate or Xfce instead?
Related problem: when I become root and tell it "yum update," it
figures out a list of umpteen hundred rpms to update, but then runs
through attempts at mirrors and keeps failing till it runs out. It failed
to connect to my wireless router (or even...

VooDoo3 = no joy
...tOS 5 on it - the graphical installer would
freeze just after starting X - but cli install worked just fine. The
failing power supply on the old CRT finally completely died, so I bought
a new Dell flat panel (1908FP) and hooked it up. With a new monitor that
works, I decided to try X and got no joy - same symptom as the graphical
install, completely frozen X display very shortly after starting the X
server.
The box isn't frozen, I can still ssh in - but keyboard/mouse are frozen
(IE impossible to ctrl-alt-FN to switch to a virtual console).
The X log in /var/log/ did not have anythin...

Hi,
I see a round of bug fixes and well as xenbus were pulled upstream.
Is anything else going into .38?

Still no joy using "print command" with 3.0.30
...tedir=/var --bindir=/usr/bin --sbindir=/usr/sbin
--with-lockdir=/var/cache/samba --sysconfdir=/etc
--with-configdir=/etc/samba --with-privatedir=/etc/samba/private
--with-swatdir=/usr/share/swat --with-smbmount --with-quotas
--with-syslog --with-utmp --with-libsmbclient --with-winbind
Still no joy. CUPS immediately prints jobs and the specified "print
command" seems to be ignored.
I would greatly appreciate any help that folks may wish to offer.

A tail of joy...
So, I _finally_ got the time to upgrade from 0.99.14 ... which I told myself
I'd upgrade from once 1.0 was released... (yep, I've been _that_ busy :)
So I read the Wiki page on 0.99->1.0 transition, and went through the config
file - for all of about 5 or 10 minutes.
I logged in at 11pm when nobody else should be using it, restarted dovecot
with the new version, and logged in.

I've got joy now -- X protocols working *BUT*
*BUT* for reasons that I find unfathomable, I have to have my

When I first started a particular terminal session, I got this:

Identify call router? How?
I have a machine in my office, it is labelled Cable and Wireless, and on
the back it says, SMarT-1
I have searched the web, and no joy. It connects to a PC via a serial
cable, has anyone heard of such a device?

SIP to H323 with no joy
Greetings and salutations to all...
I'm having a bit of a problem getting a SIP phone (Xten) to call an H323 Cisco ATA-186. Both devices can call into the * and get the demo, voicemail, etc... I'm pretty sure my problem is in my configs as it feels like a stupid error and to prove this to myself I set tcpdump on the * box to capture all UDP traffic going to and from the ATA-186. If I
