Tags to ruby interface: What I am missing? (repost)
I offer my apologies in advance for the repost. On a list as busy as this, it is sometimes easy to get missed in the shuffle. I am trying to create, display and edit a referenced object''s text field on the same view as my root object. For example: ------------------------- Quiz: <<quiz.name>> Preamble: <<quiz.preamble_presentation.text>> Postamble:

Ruby syntax question, I think ...
I am successfully navigating between controllers. However, I am unable to construct a new child (question) record. What does "undefined method `stringify_keys!'' really mean"? I think I am missing a subtlety of Ruby syntax here, since the question_controller is actually trying to call the Question constructor. Can someone point out what I am missing please? Thanks in

USB devices and Wine
I am trying to run the firmware upgrade software for my mp3 player under wine. I had to hunt around to find that I needed DCOM98 for the installer to work correctly. Now, the firmware installer is installed, but it won't do its job. I get an exception "fixme:aspi:SendASPI32Command ASPI: Partially implemented SC_HA_INQUIRY for adapter 0." I think it is trying to address the MP3

Wine, Fedora Core 4 and Act!
Newbie here, but have been running wine for a while with various programs. Anyway, I am trying to get Act! 7 (Act! 2005) to run under wine. Has anyone had any success with this? I get messages that file and print sharing need to be enabled. Any help or pointing in the right direction is appreciated. Thanks. Brian R. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. How to get dynamically created inputs from html form back to rails app
Thank you in advance. Although I have many years of experience in general, including cross- platform processing, I am not an HTML/Javascript programmer. As a result, I do not have certain specific baseline skills and/or knowledge that are presumed in the Rails and Ajax documentation. I am experienced with DOM manipulations, so the bare mechanics of manipulating the browser GUI via Javascript

Newbie question: How to represent parent-child denormalization
I am building a relatively trivial application to try to learn my way around Rails. I am having difficulty understanding how to navigate a heavily denormalized hierarchy. Could someone direct me to a bare-bones explanation of using rails to navigate database hierarchies? I am an experienced developer. Most of my work has been desktop client server, high performance, or server to server

Stability of Rails
I''ve seen a lot of issue regarding the stability of Rails apps. I''m charged with investigation of Rails for my company and I''ve looked at numerous fourms, groups, etc. (Textdrive, here, etc.) and it *seems* like there is a stability problem with Rails (ie: crashes, etc.) Is this as common as it looks, or is this tied to things like Lighttpd (web server) or Typo

Massive data insert during migration
Hello all, I''ve got a site that will be used by people (hopefully) all over the world. One of the requirements of registration is country and province of residence. I have a list of all the countries in the world and all their subnational entities. Currently, the two lists are divided between a pair of comma-delimited text files. If this were something less dynamic and cool, I''d

Which is better for production: MySQL5 or PostGres8.1?
I''m coming from an Oracle and SQL Server background. I''d like to use OpenSource for my next RoR project. MySQL5.x and Postgres8.1 seem to be the most popular. I''d like some comments on which would be the better choice for a production environment and why. Here are my initial concerns in order of priority: 1. Works well with RoR. ( migrations, etc) 2. Stable enough

Is this an elaborate hoax/troll?
I sure hope so: http://duckdown.blogspot.com/2006/03/additional-thoughts-on-why-ruby-isnt.html Seems like it''s getting genuine rebuttals, though. It''s actually kind of amusing.

Mongrel Web Server 0.3.11 -- Edge Rails and Win32Compliant
I don''t think there''s a way to do that other than using a proxy (ISAPI_REWRITE) or just a server-side redirect. Okay, what gives? find_by_id is failing.
This has the look of a "just don''t quite get it yet" problem. I am using the ActiveRecord.find_by_id method to identify the parent object (Quiz) to tie to the child object (Question) at create time. Here is the stdout log: 127.0.0.1 - - [31/Mar/2006:22:43:22 CST] "GET /question/new? parent_quiz=ff2d7022-be0a-11da-9f01-00400506faf5 HTTP/1.1" 200 806

I''m missing something obvious to a taglib programmer ...
I am trying to create, display and edit a referenced object''s text field on the same view as my root object. I have just about come to the conclusion that whoever invented of taglibs should be shot. quiz.preamble_presentation references a Presentation object instance. The Presentation object contains a property called text, among others. The generated form will display the ID of the

Rails generates query with reserved word for field name
For some reason, rails is generating this SQL: SELECT FIRST 1 * FROM questions WHERE (parent_id IS NULL) ORDER BY position DESC 1. There is no column named position referenced in my code. 2. POSITION is a reserved word in SQL92. It is the name of a string function that returns the offset of one string within another. I believe that this is a bug in Rails. Either position should be

Oddity running software from "The learning Company"
We got a "freebie" CD-ROM at a drive through that is produced by "The Learning Company". After installing dcom98, adding the registry settings to allow creation of desktop icons, and getting wine to say it was win98, I finally got the thing to install. The application main menu runs, but when it call "start.exe" to start the actual game, everything exits cleanly and

New instalation advice wanted
Hello, I am planning for the installation of a small network of computers for an after-school type program. There are many good reasons to use linux for this, but many of the specific programs that we will want are Windows apps (Okay, that was obvious since I'm writing on this forum). So far, the most stable version I have used is 20050111. Most of the educational material I have tried to

Problem using Quicken 2002, Fedora core 3, various Wine versions
We are experiencing an odd problem when using the combination of Quicken 2002, Fedora core 3, and Wine version 20050111 for fedora core 1. When we open the "Split Transaction Window", the window appears to go into an event loop. We are able to eventually break the loop by clicking on the drop down window menu. Sometimes it will break out with the window correctly sized, sometimes it
