mdadm exim mysql
...move mysql", it says it will also remove exim and mdadm for dependencies. I don't care that exim will be removed, but I need mdadm as I'm doing software RAID. But why are these even related? When I do: rpm -q --requires mysql neither exim or mdadm is listed as being a requirement. johnn

packages in "base" that are not in "nobase"
...ran "yum groupinstall Base", but this just lists everything in base, including the core packages. Mainly, I'm just looking to audit the packages, and add only necessary ones back to a nobase install. So far, I've come up with sendmail, man, logwatch, logrotate, vixie-cron. johnn

central logging/analysis
...my boxes are CentOS 5. I was going to go ahead and roll my own RPM (or, rather, rebuild Karanbir's el4 version), but it occurred to me to check what others were using in this space. Just sticking with plain old syslogd? Paying for splunk? Is there something else I haven't heard about? johnn

modules yet again
...e: 1) modules and the "master" manifests should be on the same level (just under /etc/puppet)? 2) do I need to "import" or somehow specify my modules directory? 3) if not, then there must be a pre-defined $MODULE_PATH, how can I figure out what it is? Thanks for any help. johnn

networking problems with kernel 2.6.18-8.1.15.el5xen
..., but not anything else. There are no routes listed, when I try to add a default gateway, it just says there's no network reachable. When I change /boot/grub/grub.conf back to non-xen kernel (same version), networking works again. Has anyone else updated to the latest CentOS-5 xen kernel? johnn

"near native" performance with xen?
...much RAM as you can get away with (maybe leaving the dom0 with 512MB). But are there others? Since I'm doing paravirtualization, I assume I don't need to turn on VT in the BIOS? What about 32-bit v. 64-bit OS, for the dom0 and for the domU? (I'll be using CentOS-5.) Anything else? johnn

distributing selinux policy module
...les/active/modules But even after reboot, although I can see the module listed: semodule -l ... it doesn''t seem to actually work, it continues to deny. I know the policy module works, so I''m trying to figure out what step I''m missing here. Has anyone done this yet? johnn

samba & samba-common installed then erased, but by whom?
...ooted, but I can't seem to find any other explanation for this. The only thing that runs on this server is httpd and jetty. Everything else is done manually including yum updates. And nothing that runs on this machine would ever need samba. Has anyone ever encountered something like this? johnn

yum stalls <?>
I just installed a fresh 3.3 system (because those are the ISO's I had on hand). Upon running yum update, it starts to download headers and then stalls. I hit Ctl-C and it continues to download about 4-5 more headers and stalls. I hit Ctl-C again and it pulls a few more headers. Anyone seen this and/or know how to fix it? TIA Mike

Validate a theory regarding puppet (+ firstboot) please
As I sit here staring at my manifests (and pondering a module to control Glassfish), I''m pondering the best way to do a first-run of puppet to get the initial repositories and puppet configuration downloaded. My theory is that I''ll modify rc.local (or replace firstboot-tui, we don''t use it with automated builds) to run puppetd twice - once to request the certificate,

mounting nfs as httpd_sys_content_t under selinux
...that that will work. The problem is that I have other nfs directories that I don't want httpd to access, even accidentally if we ever point httpd at those directories. So... any ideas on the nfs mount with the context option? I'm running CentOS-5.1 with latest updates of everything. johnn

SELinux and Perl script using sendmail
I have a webpage feedback form that uses a Perl script to send e-mails with "| /usr/sbin/sendmail -t". It works just fine, but SELinux is complaining about it: SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/postdrop (postfix_postdrop_t) "getattr" to pipe:[41117] (httpd_t) I'm a SELinux newb so I don't know what (if anything) to do about it. Suggestions? Miark

mysql 5.1 rpm spec file?
...5.0 spec file and, with a few mods here and there, was able to build the 5.1 rpm. But there are some new things which I am curious how they will deal with (ndb stuff, primarily), and was wondering if they have available the "beta" SRPMs or spec files for future versions of software. johnn

Chrooting SFTP over SSH2
Hi, As per the subject line - if I look up setting up chroot jails for SFTP over SSH2 I'm led to various Web sites and patches and also to a CentOS wiki page dated 2005, but what's the 'best' or 'correct' way to set this up for Centos 4.5 and 5? Thanks

tomcat error on x86_64 with 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen & jre 1.6.*
...m. If I stay with jre 6, but use kernel 2.6.18-8.el5, I also don't get the error. So it's not clear to me whether this is a java problem or a kernel problem. Any hints? For now, I can use jre 5u12, but I could file a bug if I could figure out which one is actually causing the error. johnn

xen - 4 concurrent virtual DomU limitation - how to increae this? (centos 5 x86_64)
Is there a switch or config setting somewhere that would allow me to start up more than the default 4 xen DomU instances? I am finding that the CentOS 5 (x86_64) installation only allows me to start up 4 virtual machines at a time. (It is definetly not a lack of cpu resources, memory or disk space.) Any help or pointers, would be much appreciated. Regards, -- Urs Rau

virt-install and kickstart
Has anyone successfully used a kickstart file in tandem with the "virt-install" command? I can get a generic install to begin if I omit the "-x" flag and the kickstart parameters? It seems that virt-install simply ignores my kickstart parameters. virt-install --location=http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/centos/4.5/os/i386/ --noautoconsole --file=/dev/VolGroup00/lv_centos45
