problems, and it's bit frustrating that I have to manually mangle the
string in order to be able to re-use it in another session. Maybe
strings with unknown encoding shouldn't use unicode escapes?...

Problems parsing page encoded in Shift-JIS
I''m posting this question to both mailing lists as I''m not sure whether it''s a Mechanize problem or a Nokogiri problem.
Using Nokogiri and Mechanize to load and parse a web page encoded with Shift-JIS. I have an HTML construct like:

Character set problem
I have command-line character problems in Wine: some or all text sent from Wine to my terminal is encoded as Shift-JIS, although my terminal uses UTF-8. This makes it hard to read the text. Here's an example, caused by an attempt to run a non-existing program:

How to run japanese app with wine
Hi there.
I'm sorry if this has been discussed before but I've searched a lot about it
and couldn't find an answer so here it goes: How can I run japanese
applications with wine? I've tried editing the Fonts section in .wine/config
to use japanese fonts (like jis and watanabe) but the applications only
display weird characters in place of the japanese chars. What do I have to
do so the applications will display correctly japanese text? Thanks for your
help!

Hi all,
Just wondering... Are there any plans to include i18n support in Rails
anytime soon?
I guess this is about the only feature I''m realy missing in Rails.

just for a success story :
After bad experience on fedeora core 6, I have tested a OpenSuse 10.2beta2.
I have installed with success a Windows XP SP2.
The hardware:
A intel DQ965gf
Intel Core 2 Duo 6700
USB DVD reader
IDE disk (PATA)
Set AHCI mode in BIOS and add all-generic-ide in boot option.
The opensuse 10.2beta2 does not well configured the xen kernel, you should do a

UTF8_LANG: a much better idea

language if you want, wherever you want.
(We were already able to use this, as it's part of Unicode; nobody would
use it if it wasn't explicitely recommended, though.)
We could even make vcomment automatically add some of these tags. If
the local encoding is Shift-JIS, we're pretty safe adding the Japanese
tag. (It might be English, or some other Roman language, but it's OK to
display those in a Japanese font.) Of course, this should be optional,
though I don't see any problem with it defaulting to on.

If you print:
"\xc9\x82\xbf"
you get
"\u0242\xbf"
But if you try and evaluate that string you get:
> "\u0242\xbf"
Error: mixing Unicode and octal/hex escapes in a string is not allowed
(Probably will only happen on mac/linux with default utf-8 encoding)

How to encode Non-English directories and filenames
Hello All,
I have a custom client which successfully connects to the SSH server
both on cygwin/OpenSSH-server running on windows and to standard SSH
servers runnign on Linux.
If I send a command like the following in bytes:

mkdir <Shift_JIS_characters>

after having encoded the whole command in bytes with Shift_JIS, to a
linux SSH server ... it works.
BUT if I send a similar command to a cygwin/SSH-server on windows, it fails.
It seems like the OpenSSH implementation does not honor the default

We can't mandate the use of a specific table. That's just too
burdonsome for programmers. It's reasonable to suggest them, however.
The major example is CP932: MS's version of Shift-JIS. Windows'
conversion functions will convert SJIS 0x5C (yen symbol) to U+005C
(backslash, aka REVERSE SOLIDUS.) This is for compatibility with things
like filenames and C escapes; Japanese Windows systems use yen symbols
