Yumex, yum-utils
I saw the link someone posted to SL (Scientific Linux) yumex rpm's. I
grabbed the SRPMS, changed some references from SL to CentOS in the
spec files and rebuilt the RPMS. I managed to get yumex up and
running by manually configuring yumex.conf.
What is the use of the yum-utils and the dozen or so utilities? Are
there any docs? (Bearing in mind my hack may have damaged the SL
installation)

RPMS's rebuilt or upstream one's used
Hi
I got a cleanly reinstalled 4.2 workstation. However i
still needed to build the following SRPMS from
Mandriva/Fedora :-
- Chkrootkit
- Logcheck
- Tripwire
- Xboard & Gnuchess
- Rkhunter
I needed to use the upstream versions of :-
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.1
- RealPlayer Gold
- Acrobat Reader
I needed to tweak Bind chroot to log queries and

Centosplus & CentOS Extras, Enlarge your tent
I think Jim (the other one) is doing a marvellous job with extras and
plus but he needs to expand the size of his tent. A sensible package
policy in extras/plus repo will mean fewer temptations to install 3rd
party repo's that can break your system. Some of the packages i
would like to see are :-
- MySQL 5 rpms
- php 5 rpms (already provided)
- Open Office 2.0 rpms
- webmin
- rkhunter

Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is the slowest of them all? CentOS
Some of the other RHEL rebuilds take one or two days, while CentOS
takes
2 weeks. While i can't say if they have more than a hundred users,
their
speed in releasing quarterly updates is commendable.
Technically CentOS is not the slowest, as Whitebox takes the wooden
spoon but you get the general idea. :)

Samba Error when using gedit
Hey dudes,
I've got a centOS 4.2 (clean reinstall) workstation and a Samba mount
in my home directory where "c:\uploads" is a XP Home directory
mounted as ~\uploads in my home directory. The file 'letter9feb.txt'
exists in 'c:\uploads\fd\complaint' which i created from the smith
box. I cannot save the 'letter9feb.txt' as it says its being used.

CentOS FAQ
I hadn't visited the centos forum for a long time and spotted
http://www.centos.org/modules/smartfaq/category.php?categoryid=7
Whilst it may not compare in content to the faq's of fedora/ubuntu at
http://easylinux.info/wiki/Fedora it is a step in the right
direction.
The right additions to the FAQ may see a reduction of the frequently
asked questions on the centos list.

New logo for CentOS
To celebrate CentOS as the greatest thing since sliced bread, we
should endevour to have a new logo in place. Whilst the current one
suffices, a new logo/favicon should be in place.
My artistry skills are not good (i was eating hotdogs whilst the rest
of the class learned fine art), so those of you artistically endowed
should come up with something.

List of packages in RHEL extras?
I'm subscribed to the Nahant list and noted someone complaining about
the IBM version of Java. Whilst his problems would probably disappear
by using the official Java from www.java.com, my question is what is
the list of rpms in the extras ISO/channel? I know licencing and so
on may mean they cannot be redistributed but i just wanted to know if
I'm missing out on anything.

mirrorlist.centos.org port 81? (Yumconf changes)
Hi,
Just a quick note to see if anyone else noted the changes in yum in
the updates. I've disabled thhe new format until i can verify if it
works? As i rebuilt yumex from Scientific Linux (RHEL SRPM rebuild)
and i have not enabled centosplus i don't wanna mess my system.
I don't believe you can browse the new mirrors.

Karanbir CentOS REPO - Breakability?
How many of you have tried out the KBS CentOS Fedora Extras rebuilds?
In my case i enabled his misc and extras repo on a test machine and
- it proceeded to install apt that nuked the dag and centos list
files.
- It also installed a very new version of wine, wine-devel and
wine-tools that broke my wine apps. the centOS rpms from winehq work
like champs. The winetools 0.9.3 rpm as linked from

When is update 3 coming out?
Hey dudes,
Nice work by the CentOS team in giving us arguably the best distro in
the world. When is update 3 coming out? What changes are expected in
it?
The reason i ask is that i applied the openoffice.org 2.0.1-1 rpms
and now WINE is not playing so nicely. It may be a good time to
re-wipe the system and reinstall update 3 from fresh ISO's. some of
these "goodies" from upstream

Off-Topic Mambo Vulnerabilities & Patches
On the Mambo CMS site there are vulnerabilities found. Whilst this is
not a CentOS problem, people rent/deploy servers (CentOS) on the net
with Mambo. A guy in one of the user forums on the net, had his Mambo
4.5.2 server hacked and they installed some interesting stuff in /tmp
. When a server is hacked it gives bad PR for the underlying OS.

List of updates in Update 3 ?
While update 3 was released last week, it looks
like there are 40 or so packages updated. I dunno
about squid, it is listed on
http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/rhel4as-errata.html
but the changelog is from October 2005 (unless it is an rhel only
bug).

Does your rkhunter do an md5 check?
I rebuilt rkhunter-1.2.8-1.noarch.rpm by using the spec and tgz from
the rkhunter site (www.rootkit.nl). (I rebuilt it using his
instructions.) However rkhunter does not do an md5 check. The box
used to have fedora and each time there were updates it would
complain that the some of the md5's don't match. I contacted the
author using his contact feature on Wednesday but he hasn't
