idea for an effect
Hey compiz folks,
I had some ideas for effects that might help us
cause more paroxysms of jealousy in non-compiz users:
It would be great if when you close a window, there were a number of
options to specify how the window dissappears:
1. fade to transparent (simple and classy!)
2. crack like glass into several pieces and fall off the screen in
interesting ways.
3. fly off the screen in a 3d

ZFS Support for remote mirroring
Does ZFS support any type of remote mirroring? It seems at present my only two options to achieve this would be Sun Cluster or Availability Suite. I thought that this functionality was in the works, but I haven''t heard anything lately.
Thanks!

Using NAS as PDC Shares?
Dear List,
We have just bought:
* Dual AMD CPU, 8TB NAS, 4GB RAM (DNUK.COM) - SUSE 9.3
* Two Dell 2850, 3GB RAM, Dual Xeon 3.2GHz, 300GB Raid 5 - Fedora Core 4
Now obviously we want to use the Storage ;-)
How would you guys recommend we proceed?
Samba PDC on one 2850, LDAP Directory on second, and somehow mount the
storage for the shares?
Or run the PDC on the NAS, and keep the LDAP

rsync vs. rcp
I got used to rsync's -v --progress option so much that I used it
instead of rcp even to simply copy files across the network. I dont
like software that doesnt talk to me! :-) I like the percentage bar
that --progress gives!
To my surprise, I found that, when dealing with 1GB+ files, rsync is
4-5 _times_ slower than rcp.
Yes, I know that rsync is optimized for sending deltas to a file

SAS Macros for R Users Only
I think SAS Macros has capability to call R, and execute it without it
being in the picture anywhere.
So you can use SAS Macros in a file called R.sas
In this you can create a macro called %Describe that can call R , load Hmisc
,run the describe function
Note you will need repeated use of %put in this %describe for the mapping
to take place
Use %INCLUDE to include that file in all SAS

Inefficiency of SAS Programming
If anyone wants to see a prime example of how inefficient it is to
program in SAS, take a look at the SAS programs provided by the US
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for risk adjusting and
reporting for hospital outcomes at
http://www.qualityindicators.ahrq.gov/software.htm . The PSSASP3.SAS
program is a prime example. Look at how you do a vector product in the
SAS macro
