require that you reinstall Windows 2000. To configure or customize Windows

Another entry in the registry, IsDomainMaster, helps determine which servers
become master browsers and backup browsers. Setting the value of the
IsDomainMaster entry to True makes the computer a preferred master browser.
Any computer running Windows 2000 or Windows NT can be configured as a
preferred master browser.

causing LMB elections
I've been running samba servers with 200+ W98 machines for
some time. I'm changing to W2k and everything was going fine.
I've upgraded 40 boxes. One W2k box has started announcing itself
as a local master browser for one of the workgroups. A samba
server thinks it is master, forcing election. Samba will stop
being the LMB for about 3 minutes and then will re-establish
itself as

storage. One of those (C20) also serves as an apt-cacher.
What I failed to consider in my "conversion" to Linux was who was the
'domain master browser' and who the backups were. The winXP desktop is
still set to
"IsDomainMaster = Yes" in it's registry and the "Computer Browser"
service is running. But there are no longer any backups in the network
that I'm aware of. Yesterday I was VNCing into one of the crunchers and
it wouldn't connect. Ran a .bat file I have that pings all the machine...

local master browser
Hi list,
I have a network with a Linux server, running samba 2.2.x,
and 10 Workstation. 3 of the workstation are Win2000 and
the rest is Win98 and WinME.
In the logfiles I see that every 10 Minutes the Win2000
Workstations are forcing a election to become the local master
browser for the network. The server wins the election each time
but there is still a small amount of time (maybe 4 minutes)

Problem with master browser, Vista kills network neighbourhood

machines seen is the vista client and my fileserver.
By changing the regedit entries on the client side following
this advice:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services >
Browser >
Parameters
MaintainServerList = No
IsDomainMaster = FALSE
seemed to help a bit, but the problem still remains. There
is one user with a Vista Home Edition that still have this
problem.
The global part of smb.conf:
netbios name = XXXX-FILE
workgroup = XXXX
security = user
server string = Samba ver. %v

Samba WINS Server losing all elections against
Hello everybody.
I've been trying for weeks to find a solution for my problem, but since
I couldn't find anything, here I am.
I manage a network of about 200 PCs, 90% windows XP and Vista, 10% linux.
A samba server is located on the main server, acting as a WINS server,
to manage the list of connected computers.
However, when a resident computer is badly configured (ie no wins server

Conflict between NT-PDC and Samba 2.0.6
I've got a Solaris 2.6 SPARC system running Samba 2.0.6 and an NT-4.0sp5
PDC system. If Samba is running on the Sun system when the NT PDC is
rebooted it (the NT system) complains that there is already another PDC in
the domain. This should not be as far as I can see as I've tried
specifically to configure the Samba systems not to do this and in fact
prior to upgrading to Samba version
