smbmount codepage / iocharset problem w/ W2k
...e my problem wasn't deserving of a reply from them, maybe I subscribed
to the wrong list. Can someone suggest a kernel list where I may get a
useful reply?
smbclient's ftp like interface works correctly, however the debug output
(--debug 10) isn't helping me determine what codepage/iocharset is being
used. Is there a way to determine what codepage and iocharset are being used?
My smb.conf contains
dos charset = 850
unix charset = ISO8859-1
display charset = ISO8859-1
so can I assume it's cp850 the codepage being used by smbclient?

I get only '?' for filenames which contains Umlauts.
F.e., a file called "Verkn?pfung" is displayed as "Verkn?pfung".
I use following mount-string:
mount.smbfs //SERVER/Share /home/xxx -o rw noexec nosuid nodev user
codepage cp850 iocharset iso8859-1 credentials /etc/credentials
I played around with the codepage and iocharset option, but without
success.
Version of mount.smbfs: 2.2.3a-6 for Debian
Kernel: 2.4.18 (I386)
The ugly thing is, that on a old machine running samba 2.2.2debian-2,
Kernel 2.4.9 this works fine.

Hungarian codepage problem using smbmount
...e folder named: "F?terv_?br?k_?1"
I'm using the smbmount command to mount Windows shared folders, see the
crontab file here attached.
I also attached the smb.conf file from the Linux machine for your
information.
The most important thing is that there is no difference when using the
iocharset and codepage options or when there is no such option at all or
when I used ISO8859-1 and cp850 instead of ISO8859-2 and cp852. Why is
this? Maybe the codepage files are in a wrong directory on my Linux
system? Now they can be found under /var/lib/samba/codepages/
It is interesting that files conta...

mount.cifs: iocharset/codepage
I am trying to access a share on a samba server using charset
iso8859-1 from a client using the same charset via CIFS.
"smbmount" has separate options for the server/client charset,
using "codepage=cp850,iocharset=iso8859-1" gets the correct
behavior in my case.
Unfortunately, the parameter for specifying the server codepage
doesn't seem to exist in "mount.cifs" (it looks, like utf-8 is
assumed). Is there any way to explicitly set this?

smbmount codepage/iocharset settings vs NT4
...=en_US.UTF-8. NT4 shares are mounted on the server and rsynced to

This setup is working pretty well, however on the NT box there are some
files with names containing odd characters like accented characters and
ellipsis. I'm a bit at a loss as to the correct settings of the smbmount
iocharset and codepage parameters to use, and whether the display
charset and unix charset options in smb.conf are relevant to the mounts.
I've setup a test share. An ls in smbclient gives me the correct output
in a gnome-terminal and an mget gets me the files with their correctly
utf8itfied names (cons...

Help request from non-expert: mounting a samba drive with the right charset for accented filenames

I have several difficulties in solving this problem. As I currently
understand it, if I could use the same "-o iocharset=whatever"
argument for mounting both drives, then it ought to work (though I'm
not 100% on that assertion). However, I don't know what charset I can
use which would work. Using, for example, "-o iocharset=iso8859-1" to
smbmount the network drive, the filenames appear exactly...

Assuming your usb key is formatted with VFAT [1], filenames should be
stored in UCS-2 on the key. Let's also assume your linux client uses
utf8 for filenames.
cifs.ko supports transcoding filenames via the iocharset option, where
you are supposed to give the local system encoding cifs.ko should expose
the remote filenames in. This option only works if the SMB server
supports unicode though.
You can try to use mount.cifs .... -o iocharset=utf-8
That being said, I think it's the default so the SMB server m...

Russian CHARS
Hello samba,
How can mount (smbmount) MSWIN2003 resource from Linux client
(RHEL4U2) to see russian.
I am using following command:
# smbmount //srv2/v$ /mnt/backup/srv2 -o 'credentials=userpass,iocharset=KOI8-R,codepage=koi8r'
What I should use env. variables or additional parameters from this
command (smbmount) ?
I see only that (but need russian and eng):

unix charset = utf8

Accents in filenames on vfat filesystem

"test?.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing
I have made a 'modprobe nls_cp850' and 'modprobe nls_iso8859-1' to load
those needed modules.
Then I mounted my FAT32 partition like this:
mount -t vfat -o iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 /dev/hdb1 /samba_backups
The mount succeeded but I still cannot create or copy a file that has an
accent in it's filename. Of course I can create without any problem a file
without any accent once the filesystem mounted the same way.
It seems that other people on oth...

Mount share in Ubuntu
...ttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently#Mount_password_protected_network_folders
This guide states that I need to amend fstab and then use "mount -a"
I have included the following in fstab:
//aphrodite/Personal /mnt/samba_personal cifs
username=henry,password=":)",iocharset=utf8 0 0
When I try to mount this share I get:
root at pve:~# mount -a
mount error(13): Permission denied
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)
I know the username & password are correct so am unsure of what the
problem may be.
