rsync for migrating oracle datafiles
...te some fairly large Oracle datafiles from a UFS filesystem to VxFS (VERITAS), however I am not being allowed nearly enough outage time to perform a standard file copy migration. The datafiles (of which there are about 4 are about 50GB each in size and on separate UFS filesystems. I am considering instigating a local rsync copy between the two filesystems (From UFS to VxFS) while the database is active and then ... 1. shutting the database down 2. letting the rsync migration complete 3. unmounting the UFS filesystems 4. remounting the VxFS filesystems in place of the old UFS filesystems. this - I am...

Not wishing to instigate a DB war, but...
Can I get some opinions on which free DB to use with rails for a virtual server that will eventually be doing lots of heavy database lifting? Not a lot of heavy duty querying per se. Think multiple simultaneous forums and blog sites and the like. I know each of the different DB possibilities such as MySQL and PostgreSQL has plus points and minus points. I''m particularly interested

Exceptionally long queue length queuing . . . .
I wonder if anyone out there has a perspective on this. There are a welter of tickets out there on the matter, most of them closed. This problem began for me over a year ago, and continues up to the latest versions I've installed (1.6.2.13). It happens randomly, and the suggestion on one of the bug tracker tickets that it is instigated by a small network leg looks to be on point to me,

How to Hang up a stale SIP channel?
Hi We're using asterisk 1.8.3.2 and are finding incidences of stale channels remaining after both parties have hung up. We have tried to hang the channel up using channel request hangup But by it's definition, it will not work as it only executes the hangup as soon as the the channel is written to or read from but as the channel is stale, it will not be written to or read from so the

File "locking" problem continues.
...ving the file locally, on the Windows box. I got a "sharing violation" error, saying the file was in use. So, Windows saw a problem, too, but again, moving the file with SERVER2 brok the "lock." I am wondering if there is a process, perhaps related to smbfs, on SERVER2 that is instigating this problem, but I am at a loss on what it could be. The same programs (qmail and Courier IMAP) that access the share are running on both servers, and we use a load balancer, so the affected user is not accessing his directories from only one server or the other. The only process that normally a...

Another Fedora decision
I think it well to recall that the change which instigated this tempest was not to the network operations of a RHEL based system but to the 'INSTALLER' process, Anaconda. Now, I might be off base on this but really, ask yourself: Who exactly uses an installer program? And what is the threat model being addressed by requiring that the installer set a suitably strong password for root?

[LLVMdev] interesting possible compiler bug
For what it's worth, I will be at the social tonight, and am happy to discuss this paper. I'm a co-author and the instigator the work here to clarify the spec and allow a large number of exciting optimizations on code that have previously not be employed merely because of the use of malloc rather than (for example) alloca. Can this be done with NUT? (ordered shutdown, revisited)
Reference the repeater mode of the dummy-ups driver used in the way described by Steffen there is a characteristic which needs to be defined better. I could not find any notes on what the driver does in terms of shutdown. If as a result of LB you issue a upsdrvctl shutdown from a secondary server acting as a master for the repeated driver (which is pretending to run out of battery early) you

Ahead Nero Burning ROM soon to support Vorbis!
As mentioned at: http://www.cdfreaks.com/document.php3?Doc=101 : ---QUOTE: Is Ahead planning to add Ogg Vorbis support and is there any date set? Well we probably owe a big apology to all those users who have been requesting support. To begin with, I think the Vorbis communities and developers alike, have done a fantastic job in widening the acceptance level of the Ogg formats. It ’s also a

[LLVMdev] interesting possible compiler bug
They have been discussing this for a solid two days on the C committee list with many pro and con opinions, all supported by various parts of the standard or other sources. My personal opinion is that it's only a bug if some real program can be made to fail because of this. If I were writing this test case for LPT, I would call an external function and pass the value curr to it. If I

howto build xen from source with existing config?
hi, i´m using fedora core 6 and want to build xen 3.1 from source for the 2.6.20 kernel. how can i build xen with the existing kernel-config from /boot (e.g. config-2.6.20-1.2948.fc6xen) and an installed kernel-devel (source) package? is it good to use this config or should i create a new one? i searched the net and haven´t found any howto to build xen from source with newer kernel versions and

Automatic differentiation in R
Hi I recently gave a presentation about Automatic Differentiation (AD) and R at the Eighth Euro AD Workshop in Oxford (17/07/09). The presentation was intended as a general introduction to R and the desire for a generic AD interface for R. During the presentation I emphasised the need and the high level of interest that the R community has in developing such an interface and that input from the
