rsync for migrating oracle datafiles
Hi - a question for all ye rsync guru's out there... I have a need to migrate some fairly large Oracle datafiles from a UFS filesystem to VxFS (VERITAS), however I am not being allowed nearly enough outage time to perform a standard file copy migration. The datafiles (of which there are about 4 are about 50GB each in size and on separate UFS filesystems. I am considering instigating a local

Not wishing to instigate a DB war, but...
Can I get some opinions on which free DB to use with rails for a virtual server that will eventually be doing lots of heavy database lifting? Not a lot of heavy duty querying per se. Think multiple simultaneous forums and blog sites and the like. I know each of the different DB possibilities such as MySQL and PostgreSQL has plus points and minus points. I''m particularly interested

Exceptionally long queue length queuing . . . .
...rspective on this. There are a welter of tickets out there on the matter, most of them closed. This problem began for me over a year ago, and continues up to the latest versions I've installed (1.6.2.13). It happens randomly, and the suggestion on one of the bug tracker tickets that it is instigated by a small network leg looks to be on point to me, because while it happens way often, it doesn't always happen. My ITSPs have all dropped IAX, and if they're experiencing this problem I can see why. Once the first of these messages has occurred, it's "goodbye audio" for...

How to Hang up a stale SIP channel?
...hung up. We have tried to hang the channel up using channel request hangup But by it's definition, it will not work as it only executes the hangup as soon as the the channel is written to or read from but as the channel is stale, it will not be written to or read from so the command will not instigate the hangup. Does anyone know of any way we can hangup a stale channel via the console? Thanks in Advance Ish -- Ishfaq Malik Software Developer PackNet Ltd Office: 0161 660 3062

File "locking" problem continues.
Hello, all. A while back I posted a question about an issue, but did not get any replies. I understand this might not be something anybody has a definite answer for, and I understand I may not be offering the right information. If that is the case, please let me know what information I can provide, and please don't hesitate to offer any suggestions about what could be causing this problem.

Another Fedora decision
I think it well to recall that the change which instigated this tempest was not to the network operations of a RHEL based system but to the 'INSTALLER' process, Anaconda. Now, I might be off base on this but really, ask yourself: Who exactly uses an installer program? And what is the threat model being addressed by requiring that the installer s...

[LLVMdev] interesting possible compiler bug
For what it's worth, I will be at the social tonight, and am happy to discuss this paper. I'm a co-author and the instigator the work here to clarify the spec and allow a large number of exciting optimizations on code that have previously not be employed merely because of the use of malloc rather than (for example) alloca. Can this be done with NUT? (ordered shutdown, revisited)
...he second MONITOR line and have the usual 1 setting. In that case the above concerns apply. Is there any better way of arranging the configuration? Incidentally as part of this project I have been developing a series of python scripts that can be called to iterate over a VMWare ESXi/VCenter and instigate a controlled shutdown of the VM's being manage and then shut down the ESXi itself. This uses VMWare's SDK and avoids having to add something to VMWare itself. If this is of interest I am happy to publish it here once complete for the convenience of other NUT users.

Ahead Nero Burning ROM soon to support Vorbis!
...cations, and is now looking to spread to hardware devices in the future. But maybe a small explanation of the way Nero works regarding plug-ins might help with some understanding Regarding audio formats, Nero has a very flexible plug-in architecture, meaning it’s not so difficult for developers to instigate external audio codec support that would work directly within Nero itself. It was always our intention to make this implementation as adaptable as possible, without any restriction and totally format independent. Of course we’ve been very late in providing the documentation, meaning our own commitme...

I am guessing that the problem is somewhere in the shutdown of pts/1. If I kill 13015 (pts/1) from the direct ssh connection then I return control of the tmux session back to the terminal and I remain logged on to the remote host. If I then exit the remote host I retur...

Re: Demonizing generic Linux issues as Fedora Core-only issues -- WAS: Hi, Bryan
...Especially when one thing that severely dominates the landscape are statements of "Fedora Core / Red Hat-only bugs" which are simply total fabrications. Why am I blamed for pointing out that they are not? Oh, that's right, it's not popular to explain something as not a Red Hat-instigated issue. I seem to remember that same issue in the Windows world as well, where people seem to want to assign blame to Microsoft for everything too. The problem is that when everyone just instantly blames Red Hat for everything, just like Microsoft, it drowns out all those who do have _legitimate_...

[LLVMdev] interesting possible compiler bug
They have been discussing this for a solid two days on the C committee list with many pro and con opinions, all supported by various parts of the standard or other sources. My personal opinion is that it's only a bug if some real program can be made to fail because of this. If I were writing this test case for LPT, I would call an external function and pass the value curr to it. If I

Automatic differentiation in R
Hi I recently gave a presentation about Automatic Differentiation (AD) and R at the Eighth Euro AD Workshop in Oxford (17/07/09). The presentation was intended as a general introduction to R and the desire for a generic AD interface for R. During the presentation I emphasised the need and the high level of interest that the R community has in developing such an interface and that input from the
