3.0.6 & "string overflow by 1"
I updated one of my file servers to 3.0.6, and while file serving is
improved (no M$-Office file already open messages), every time I access
a printer my logs flood with messages like to those below. It seems I
can set printer properites, etc... but when I print the jobs seem to go
to never-never land (still researching where the jobs go).

CUPS support for Canon i255 Inkjet Printer?
Hi all
I tried installing a remote WINXP SMB shared Canon i255 Inkjet printer
on the CUPS printer queue, but could not find the model number in the
supported printers list.
How do I print on this printer?
With regards.
Sanjay.

Strange problem with HP DeskJet 980cxi and HP Color InkJet CP1700
We have a last problem (I hope) before rolling out our new SMB domain using
SuSE Linux 8.2 with Samba 2.2.7a and cups 1.1.18. It seams that not every
windows printer driver is working correctly.
Samba is configured as a PDC and distributes the windows printer driver
files. The printing system is cups. Printers are connected via
JetDirect-boxes to the network. Printers like the HP LaserJet 4100

HP vs. Brother Printers: Use with Centos/Fedora
...cost -- but
tend to last longer) with more costly cartrides (but each cartridge prints
several *thousand* pages, vs. ink carts only printing *hundreds* of pages).
Once you look in terms of *years* of service and *thousands* of pages, laser
printers are actually cheaper to buy and operate than inkjets.
The other *big* gotcha is printer language: laser printers are page oriented
devices -- they *must* buffer a whole page at a time -- so often laser
printers speak some flavor of PostScript (they might as well, since PostScript
is also page oriented) -- this makes them almost always Linux / UNIX f...

Printer recommendations
...at the people
on this list are using for printers that are currently available, since
we are using versions of CUPS and foomatic that are frozen, and any
other issues or "gotchas" that you are aware of.
For the replacement printer, I'm considering a color laser printer
instead of the inkjets that I've been using, and I'm dithering back and
forth over the question of direct-connect or networked printer.
Suggestions, warnings, and horror stories are welcome.
Thanks in advance.

margins with postscript device
I've been having a problem when printing plots to a HP DeskJet 2500C printer.
This printer, like most inkjet printers, has a large minimum bottom margin.
For most HP inkjet printers, the bottom 1/2" (left 1/2" inch for landscape)
of the page can't be printed too. The postscript device in R has a default of
1/4" margins between the paper edge and the plotting area. This

In my DEFINITELY not-so-humble opinion, the "run away as fast as you

The only real differences I'm aware of between Brother and HP LASER

getting rid of hp c3180
I have a hp photosmart C3180 all-in-one and am well and truly sick of it.
It seems like every time I go on another printing binge,
I need yet another print cartridge.
hp-clean doesn't help.
IIRC this use it or lose it "feature" is common to inkjets.
What should I replace it with?
If I want a non-cloggging printer,
is laser jet the way I need to go?
I'd like to do color occasionally,
but might not want to pay the price for a color laser.

Fedora, Cups, print$, and Windows XP - Oh my :) Round 2 - FIGHT
Hello from Canada!
I'm posting again about a problem I posted about in February, I'll repost
the message here, with updated information. When I read that it was a
possible/probably bug with Samba, I decided to wait a while and see if it
wasn't hashed out by now. It doesn't appear to be fixed (or I messed up).
Anyways, here is the information with updates. A "*" indicates

Wine & Cups printing
...Rng and it's various parts from my RH 7.1/KDE-2.2.1 system and
installed Cups. I've set up all of my printers under Cups (two
Laserjets, both PS and two inkjet, not PS) and they all work great with
my linux apps and even with Corel WPO2K for Linux, but under Wine I
can't get the two inkjets to work. The printers show up in the print
dialog and when I click on OK to print the job, it seems to work, but
all i get out of the inkjet printers is a Postscript error message...

Sharing a USB Printer
We're trying to share an Epson USB inkjet printer via Samba 3.0.2-7 on our new
Fedora server.
The share is set up OK, and can be seen and opened from Windows clients. However,
although the Fedora box can print to the Epson, the Windows boxes can't.
All other Samba shares, including a laser printer connected to the parallel port,
work fine.
Does anyone have a clue how to fix this?

Fedora, Cups, print$, and Windows XP - Oh my :)
Strange problem with Windows XP Home/Pro Clients and Fedora based Samba
w/cups server.
-----
Executive summary:
I can make the printer print if I, in order:
Install the printer driver in windows
Delete the printer driver in windows
so a smbstatus
kill the session
Install the printer driver in windows again.
Then everything works. This is not just one client, its several. I assume

I have a few different problems with samba 2.2.5 PLEASE HELP
I am running samba 2.2.5 on a Redhat Linux 7.3 box in a very large Windows NT domain, and I am running into a few different issues that make no sense to me.
1) For some reason my local clients can only get to the server by using it's fully qualified domain name. If you use the short name you receive a message about not being permitted to connect from the current workstation ( or something

Need tip on an inexpensive printer for college student using CentOS 5.5
Sending my son back to college with a dual-boot laptop with Win 7 and
CentOS 5.5. He uses Win7 to manage his iPod and SW that sometimes
issued by a professor for a specific course...otherwise he uses CentOS
for everything else. That setup worked well last year, except for
printing. He has a low-end Cannon printer that is not supported in the
Linux realm.
Most of his coursework was uploaded to

Problems with Intel Netport Printserver and Samba
Running RH6.0 I am able to print just fine from linux, the problem now is
getting smb printing working. I am using an Intel Netport Express PRO/100
printserver. Previous to my upgrade from RH5.2 when I had the printer
directly connected to the samba server, I was able to print just fine from
the windows client machines (not using the raw method)
My /etc/printcap is as follows
