pairing data using combn with criteria
...other's family number, father's family number, and sex of the beetle. I would like to pair up the individuals for breeding. I would, however, like to avoid breeding beetles of the same sex (obviously), the same family, and with the same mother's family or father's family, to avoid inbreeding. The pairs of the beetles can be done with the function combn(individual, 2). I have been trying to use the FUN argument of combn by reducing the options for combn for each individual by negating the rows that share the same sex, family, and parents' families, but I have had no success. Is...

errorbar il lattice plot
...e but I seem to be stumped. I can put the error bar function inside my code as if it were a panel function, but it then sits there quite unused. I am not even clear how what data object to put the standard errors for the thing to work... My code (the version that at least draws a plot): xyplot(inbreeding~generations|breeds, data = trellisplot, type = 'l', layout = c(2,5), col = 'black', lwd = 3, errbar = function(x, y, err, down = T, width = 0.005, lwd = 1, plot = T, colour="black") { up <- y + err dn <- y - err x.range <- max(x) - min(x) wid.lf <...

How do you make a formal "feature" request?
Who decides what features are in R and how they are implemented? If there is someone here who has that authority I have this request: A report() function analogous to the plot() function that makes it easy to generate a report from a table of data. This should not be in some auxiliary package, but part of the core R just like plot(). As a long time SAS user I cannot believe R does not have this.

ZFS and Linux
Hello, I believe that ZFS and it''s concepts is truly revolutionary to the point that I no longer see any OS as modern if it does not have comparable storage functionality. Therefore I think that file system/disk manager with similar qualities should be written for Linux. Does Sun have plans to dual license ZFS as GPL so it can be ported to native Linux? If not, is it legal to write
