I'm trying to fit the Bass Diffusion Model using the nls function in R but I'm running into a strange problem. The model has either two or three parameters, depending on how it's parameterized, p (coefficient of innovation), q (coefficient of immitation), and sometimes m (maximum market share). The problem is badly scaled -- parameters from very small to very big. nlmrt package manages a bit better, but scaling would likely make it and nls both happier. nlxb insists on having its data in a data frame. I'd like to use an R CMD BATCH script as part of a chron job that is set up to run every hour. The trouble is that the script creates a graphical output in a file via png(), and apparently this in turn works through X. I am being attacked by an entire subnet where the first two parts of the IP address remain identical but the last two parts vary sufficiently that it is not caught by fail2ban since the attempts do not meet the cut-off of a certain number of attempts within the given time.
