Call by reference: Was: Object orientation?
...without using the "<<-"
assignment operator or other nasty tricks. I had the same problem and I did
a nasty workaround two weeks ago implementing the functionality of reference
variables, but today I "ran into" the [R] help page for ".Alias". With
.Alias one can immitate call by reference! Here is an example that shows how
it works:
Foo <- function(value=0) {
this <- list(
value = value
)
class(this) <- "Foo";
return(this);
}
set <- function(object, value) {
this <- .Alias(object);
this$value <- value;
return (invi...

Problems with nls
I'm trying to fit the Bass Diffusion Model using the nls function in R but
I'm running into a strange problem. The model has either two or three
parameters, depending on how it's parameterized, p (coefficient of
innovation), q (coefficient of immitation), and sometimes m (maximum market
share). Regardless of how I parameterize the model I get an error saying
that the step factor has decreased below it's minimum. I have tried
re-setting the minimum in nls.controls but that doesn't seem to fix the
problem. Likewise, I have run through a...

Problems with nls
The problem is badly scaled -- parameters from very small to very big.
nlmrt package manages a bit better, but scaling would likely make it and
nls both happier. nlxb insists on having its data in a data frame.
Here's my code
rm(list=ls())

Re: R-Gnome. I don't want abuse!
...me, I could do that with Axum, but I don't
recall about S+4.0.
Axum is not free, does not exist for Linux, it does not have the
programmabaility of R, and it does not have some of the statistical
modeling capabilities, so I'm not proposing to use Axum and I don't
expect R should try to immitate it. If the powers that be say "we are
canceling support for R-gnome", I might be disappointed, but I will
still keep on trying to find my way around R. I'm still assembling my
tip sheet, which you can see if you want to make sure that I'm actually
making an effort (http://la...

R in cron job: X problems
I'd like to use an R CMD BATCH script as part of a chron job that is set
up to run every hour.
The trouble is that the script creates a graphical output in a file via
png(), and apparently this in turn works through X.
When cron invokes the job, no X server is available -- I suppose that
the DISPLAY variable is not set -- and so R exits with an error message
in the output file. (If I run the

An example of a cisco based route server would be to:
telnet route-views.routeviews.org
http://routeviews.org/ lists a bunch of route views servers down near
the bottom, which appear to be accessable by telnet.? Note, quagga based
route servers are open source immitations of the Cisco command interface
and have similar commands to the cisco's.

Monty on holiday
Hi folks,
My wife and I are taking a long weekend to celibrate our anniversary. I won't
be around again until Wednesday to answer email or do anything else on Vorbis.
Yeah, I know, I usually answer my email once a month anyway (so likely no one
would notice me being gone), but just so folks know if anything really juicy
comes up :-)
I'll be merging my latest branch with mainline

Blocking attacks from a range of IP addresses
I am being attacked by an entire subnet where the first two parts of the IP address remain identical but the last two parts vary sufficiently that it is not caught by fail2ban since the attempts do not meet the cut-off of a certain number of attempts within the given time.
Has anyone created a fail2ban filter for this type of attack? As of right now, I have manually banned a range of IP addresses

[LLVMdev] OT: new here, dynamic/runtime compilation (in general)
...eal, __imag, ...);
some custom: builtin geometric vectors and quaternions (I do a lot of 3D stuff...);
..
I also have Garbage Collection, Dynamic Typing, and Prototype OO available as library features (note, I mean 'Prototype OO', in reference to the object system used in Self, and crudely immitated in JavaScript, and not in reference to "some crude mockup of OOP in C"...).
well, one can use these and pretend they were using a real script language...
note that these library features do not depend on compiler extensions, and so they also still work in parts of my project compiled...

ZFS extended ACL
What is wrong with this?
# chmod -R A+user:webservd:add_file/write_data/execute:allow /var/apache
chmod: invalid mode: `A+user:webservd:add_file/write_data/execute:allow''
Try `chmod --help'' for more information.
This works in a zone, works on S10u5, does not work on OpenSolaris2008.11.

Is this card new? I''m not finding it at the usual places like Newegg, etc.
It looks like the LSI SAS3081E-R, but probably at 1/2 the
