problems with categorical variables
Hi All: I am working on a dataset of a study on healthcare workers. One of the variables I am studying is a categorical variable (variable name:EDUC, indicates educational achievement, with 6 levels: "illiterate", "primary", "junior high school", "high school completed", "undergraduate", and "postgraduate"). I want to collapse the 6 levels to a 4-level categorical variable (let's call it "educrec", with the following levels: "po...

Stream File Type?
...es not correctly open on any of the Mac or Windows machines that I've tried. When broadcasting directly from Nicecast the file type is a .pls which both iTunes and WMP seem to deal with just fine right out of the box. Is there a way to have Icecast2 send as some other type? My users are tech-illiterate so making changes on their end it not an option. Thanks, Brett

heritability estimation
...a RIL population. Papers I've checked either use either SAS or SPSS or do not give any details at all. I've found some reference to using variance components in ANOVA, using the kinship or wgaim packages, but I don't have a clue as to how to do any of this. Is there any way fro a very R illiterate user to do it? Running Perfect World through Wine using Winebottler
I am trying to install the game "Perfect World" (http://pwi.perfectworld.com/download) On my Mac using Wine. After going through the obnoxious process of installing wine (for me this took forever because I am hugely computer illiterate, but through this process I learned to find info in forums AND use the terminal! Go me!), PW did not work. It installed fine, it would even launch but the graphics didn't load, I couldn't click on buttons, ect. ect. I then proceeded to ask my question on the Perfect World forums, (see h...

Persistent desktop icons ?
...users can't delete ? On most of my client desktops, I have some home-made shortcuts, like here for example : http://www.microlinux.fr/configurations.html The shortcut on the lower left corner of the screen launches the public library management system. Most of the users are quite computer-illiterate, and more often than not, they tend to erase these shortcuts (and then call me panic-stricken at 07:00 in the morning :oD). To configure the shortcuts themselves, I just edit a .desktop file by hand. I tried various combinations of chown and chmod, but to no avail. Even if there are minimum ac...

SysVinit guidance, please
...ago and tried to be more observant. What had gotten my attention earlier is that the once-familiar banner displayed on about everything except my room's ceiling was missing. After some red herrings and blind alleys (hey, you don't have to worry about mixed metaphors when you're an illiterate old coot!) I decided that the missing banners and the fact that the power was killed while a graphical page was displayed was what I saw. Anyhow, it seems that these extinct banners were a function of the /bin/shutdown routine in SysVinit because banners happen in CentOS 4.x whether the shutdo...

openssh-1.2pre15 on AIX
Hi. Pre15 compiles out-of-the-box on AIX 4.3.2 ...almost. No patch included this time, but the following were the gotchas: - The __P() prototyping doesn't work (as discussed earlier) - bsd-daemon.o wasn't linked into libssh.a (though configure seemed to detect the need for it) DCE patch will follow shortly. Win2K and multiple Samba servers and Samba 2.07
Hello to all, This is my first ever use of a mailing list so bear with my ramblings and illiterate prose. I have been using samba from 2.03 to 2.07 for over a year now. We run DHCP, WINS on the samba (acting as domain) box running Mandrake 6.0. Windows machines are running everything from Win95 up to Win2K. With Win2K I have problems with slow read/write, particularly for one application whi...

retrieving search result positions
...nts, but I can''t find how to retrieve specific details about the results. I''d like to be able to run fairly simple queries. I then need to look at each term match, and get its document id and the character (not byte) position at which it occurs in the source document. My semi-illiterate reading of search.c suggests this is available, but looking at the SearchHits returned by a SpanTermQuery, they don''t seem to contain the methods I''m looking for. Thanks for any help. alex
