freenode #asterisk IRC channel identd problem
...else has had this problem and solved it. So here's the situation: Whenever I try to login to the #asterisk channel I get a message like "you must be identified to login to this channel." So after doing a little research on this, I found that the identity thing is related to the "identd" server used to identify computers on a network. Apparently in Linux there is some identd server thing that needs to be configured so I didn't mess with this and used mIRC on Windows which has a identd server built into the program. I have my firewall forwarding port 113 to the computer ru...

identd on "clients"
Hi, I use shorewall on my router (internal ip: 192.168.1.4). The router is used as a gateway for my lan. If I try to access an IRC server from any "client" (for exaples 192.168.1.1) I get the message "no identd". I tried the following in my shorewall rules config (etc/shorewall/rules), but i doesn''t work: ACCEPT net loc tcp 113 Does anyone have any idea? Thanks a lot, Lobster

IRC channel #asterisk on irc.freenode.net
...r dummies" question, but hey, we all have been human infants also =) Problem is, that I can not log on to this channel and I haven't found anything helpful during the past few days either. 1. The irc.freenode.net server gives me "Couldn't look up your hostname" and "No identd (auth) response" followed with "Closing Link: StiX (Invalid username [~antti.loh])" 2. Should I register? Where? That's one of the problems. I use mIRC on WIN2k and I should have the "On connect, always get: Localhost and IP address" on. Please, help me, so I don'...

tcp wrappers Question..
hey folks, I keep seeing this on the internet "The user name lookup feature of TCP Wrappers uses identd to identify the username of the remote host. By default, this feature is disabled, as identd may appear hung when there are a large number of TCP connections." but I cant seem to find out how/where to enable said feature. Jason

identd w/ openssh
I've just realised that when a user uses ssh to connect to a machine, then sets up a port forward and uses it, the resulting connection is reported by identd as belonging to root. While I realise ident is not any kind of secure authentication, it doesn't make much sense to make it even less so by letting any user create connections reported to be made by root. The sshd should drop all root privs and use only the connecting user's id before sett...

Identd in jail.
Hi Few days ago I've problem with running identd in jail on 4.10-stable I've found that getcred() sysctl isn't permitted from within jail on 4.x. R.Watson suggest some "cheap hack" for this but I've solved this without patching the kernel. My patched ident gets result of getcred() sysctl from jauthd daemon via unix socke...

[Bug 395] New: ident-protocol gives "root" as connection owner
...NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: sshd AssignedTo: openssh-unix-dev at mindrot.org ReportedBy: bibjah at bg.bib.de When I tunnel a connection through openssh and the server tries to figure out who is making the connection, it asks the local identd "who is running sshd" instead of asking the remote identd (on the originating system) "who is running the program connecting". Therefore, all server programs relying on identd will believe that all tunneled connections come from local user "root". I think this is a se...

samba and squid?
Hi all. I'd like to look into using samba in conjunction with squid, to authenticate users before leaving the intranet thru the squid proxy. I'm using RH6, and thought there may be either a PAM module to do this, or the possibility of authenticating against a PDC or samba server for squid authentication? Thanks, Dave

LPRng security
Hi all, I just looked into LPRng to see to what extent it is affected by the problems recently reported for the BSD lpd. It seems that it is fairly safe from those mentioned in the SNI advisory. > Problem 1: File creation > > Individuals with access to the line printer daemon from a privileged > port on a valid print client can tell lpd to create a file, providing > the name of

tcp wrappers Question..
...e man pages for hosts_options and hosts_access. It is rare for systems to support RFC 931 and common for firewalls to drop requests (creating long delays in connections), so user name lookup is probably only useful within a private network of systems that you control, on which you have enabled identd on each client system.
