2GB limit patch
Hi all,
I was reading the discussion about this 1.3.0pre1 release on
HydrogenAudio and someone linked an old thread in which one patched FLAC
1.2.1 to support WAV-files larger then 2GB. It might be worth investigating:

Also, shouldn't the changelog feature the 4GB windows fix? I remember
reading about that bug fix at the start of 1.3.0, and I for one was
incredibly excited about it.
if nobody remembers it I can try to hunt down that patch on the mail list.

FLAC 1.3.0 released
There are several links to Windows compiles in the Hydrogenaudio thread
for FLAC 1.3.0 at

On Unices or Linuxes building from git should be straightforward enough,

Converting audio samples
Hey everyone, I'm new to the world of audio, so can you please drop some very basic audio knowledge on me?
What's the correct way to convert from float audio samples to integer ones like FLAC uses?
If I'm converting to 8-bit, that has a range of -128 to 127, right? Do I multiply my float input by 127 or 128?

...quality ranges. Also, try encoding at lower
sampling rates.
At q -1 to 4, oggenc will use the Xiph.org 1.0.1 tunings
At q 5 to 10, oggenc will use the Sjeng.org GT3b1 tunings, which has
better pre-echo and transient handling.
(Between 4 and 5, there will be a mix between the two)

A large group 64kbps listening test has just come to an end, organised through

cover a wide range of musical genres. The codecs tested were[2]:

patent issues with Vorbis
...ther patents for stereo processing, which are not of much that concern as the one sited above. Does anyone know about more such patents?
I see some discussion done on the patent issues in this mailing list. Did it stop there only? http://lists.xiph.org/pipermail/vorbis/2003-December/024618.html
In Hydrogenaudio forum also some discussion happened. http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t13686.html
What is the current stand of the people/developers associated with Vorbis about the patent issues?
Cheers,
-Kumar.

Efficiency
...d my
entire archive from ape to flac. I have an old 400 mhz laptop in my
office running xubuntu, which I run into a receiver. Works great. Since
switching to flac, I notice the (rather loud) system fan on the laptop
running much less of the time during playback.
I see on this page
http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Lossless_comparison
that a flac advantage is "Very fast decoding" while monkey's audio
boasts "High efficiency", and I was hoping for something a little more
concrete.

Easier OggDrop version
Hi.
I think that the vorbis team should use this version of OggDrop RC3 as the
official OggDrop RC3, because the menu interface is easier to use (& you can
see what kind of mode you have chosen).

See this thread for more info:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=4683
<p>I only have one problem now: what quality value should I use to match the
quality of Garf's tuned -b350 RC2 mode (while using lower bitrate :) )?
Ah, back to good old listening tests... :))

Re: seeking problems

this is another good data point. I have been really short on
time to look into this. there are also some other reports going
on that you might want to follow along with:

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=851155&group_id=13478&atid=113478
I don't think the changes in CVS will help, but I still have
Miroslav's improved seeking patch to try.

Apple's Core Audio File container format
Hi all,
It hasn't really been publicized much yet, but Apple has a new
container file format called CAF:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MusicAudio/Reference/CAFSpec/
CAF files current support integer and float PCM formats, A-law,
u-law and a number of others including AAC and Apple's own Apple
Lossless Audio Codec (alac).
I have already implemented support for what I can

FLAC: specifying all files with extension .WAV
Hi,
I want to use the "flac" encoder (in commandline mode) and I specify this
command to encode all .WAV files in the current directory:

Extension Packets?
I have a project I'm investigating. The goal is to basically add lossless
extensions to Opus. You have an Opus stream with standard packets, but
interwoven in there are extension packets that contain the residuals.
Ideally, compliant decoders play the stream back and ignore the extension
packets. This (hopefully) makes the "lossless" stream compatible with
existing players.

[PATCH] Website comparison + fix IE
Hi all,
The past few weeks I've been busy comparing lossless audio codecs to
update the comparison.html page on the FLAC website (and because I wrote
a comparison for Hydrogenaudio in the past) and its ready now. Because
the patch is pretty large, I've placed it here:
http://www.icer.nl/misc_stuff/update-comparison-and-fix-IE-news.patch.zip
The reason to do this is because the current test is outdated and to me
it did not seem impartial. The patch gets rid of a lot of...
