question on hwclock
I am trying to hwclock to set the time. (hwclock -w) this is what I get on standard 5.2 x86_64. hwclock --debug hwclock from util-linux-2.13-pre7 hwclock: Open of /dev/rtc failed, errno=19: No such device. No usable clock interface found. Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method. [root at devcentos5x64 src...

hwclock problem
Hi. I run peridocally (from cron) on all of my machines 30 * * * * root /sbin/hwclock --systohc All of those machines in question take their time via NTP from the same local server, and that server gets its time from a ntp pool. Now I had to reboot a couple of them two days ago and to my surprise all had problems with the time upon booting. Here are the important files: [root at...

I suggest reading the man page for 'hwclock'. Namely, the --utc option. Strange issue with system time being off
Hi all, I am having an issue with some older CentOS 5.3 servers. Every time the server boots, it gives the error "Cannot access the hardware clock by any known method", and then promptly sets the time 5 hours behind the hardware clock, down to the second. After the system is up. "hwclock" works fine. hwclock --debug does not show any error at all. The hardware clock is configured in local time. /etc/sysconfig/clock is set to UTC=false and ZONE="America/Chicago". /etc/localtime is a copy of Chicago's zone file. /etc/adjtime is configured with "LOCAL" as...

Problem in linux domU re: /dev/rtc and hwclock
Hi all, One of our domU VMs (CentOS 5.6 x86_64) runs a cobol application, which in turn called ''clock'' to get timestamps. Changing this is non-trivial. When I try to call ''clock --debug'' I get: [root@vm0010 ~]# clock --debug hwclock from util-linux-2.13-pre7 hwclock: Open of /dev/rtc failed, errno=19: No such device. No usable clock interface found. Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method. The device exists: [root@vm0010 ~]# ls -lah /dev/rtc crw------- 1 root root 10, 135 Jul 12 18:00 /dev/rtc As I underst...

Icecast Logs Timestamp in UTC
Hello, I'm having a major problem with the timestamps in both the Icecast access.log and error.log. The timestamp on the logfiles themselves is accurate, but the logging of the various connections to my streams is in UTC. No matter how I try to configure the hwclock or the system clock, the log timestamp is always UTC, which is 8 hours ahead of my current time zone. I've even tried setting the hwclock to localtime, but to no avail. I've just updated and compiled to the newest kernel as well, but that still hasn't solved the problem. Clearly, I...

Updating hardware clock from cron
...be off by a lot when it comes back up. So setting it periodically from a cron job could be useful. What do others do? Adding a one liner to /etc/cron.daily that invokes /etc/rc.d/init.d/ntpd would do it but it seems heavyweight to restart ntpd. Alas, the script doesn't export just the sync_hwclock function.

Lotus Notes and Daylight Saving Time
...ge from CET to CEST on sunday. Tests have shown, that calendar entries will get shifted one hour after DST started. If you open an entry there is an info, that the event is located in a different timezone. From a Windows point of view this is perfectly normal, because Windows changes the hwclock to the new version of localtime on every DST event. It doesn't change the timezone it lives in because there is no need to. Linux on the other hand takes care about DST in software. (compare http://tldp.org/HOWTO/TimePrecision-HOWTO/index.html ) And so LotusNotes gets confused. You c...

Timeserver sending wrong time to Windows Clients
...MT. The problem I am having is that my windows clients do not get the right time no matter what I set the zoneinfo or timezone or Linux system clock to. It almost appears that my zoneinfo of [America/Chicago] adds 6 hours to GMT instead or subtracting 6 hours to get the correct local time. If the hwclock is set to GMT and zoneinfo is set to [no selection], the windows boxes get GMT. (i.e. correct time + 6 hours). If the hwclock is set to GMT and zoneinfo is set to [America/Chicago] (CST), the windows boxes get GMT + 6 (i.e. correct time + 12 hours) - Totally Bizarre! I have tried every combinatio...

Timeserver Timezone Mismatch BUG?
I am having a terrible time getting the hardware clock, system clock and the time served to my winXX boxes to jive on my Mandrake 7.2/Samba 2.07 machine. I have my clock file, timezone and localtime links set to America/Chicago. No matter what I do, if I use UTC for my hwclock, my system clock on the Linux box is fine, but samba passes system time +6 hours to the windows clients. (Yes I know CST = UTC - 6) I really do not believe that this is a samba issue. I have searched in vain through all of the documentation I can find, the alt.os.linux.mandrake list, the comp.prot...

NTP and hardware clock
...e hardware clock was kept in sync, but now after rebooting without network, the system clock was skewed. Is there some way to: + Make ntpd run, even when no ntp-server could be contacted + Make ntpd synchronise the hardware clock automatically PS Yes, I know I can run ntpdate from cron or run hwclock to synchronize my hardware clock. But shouldn't this be part of the infrastructure (either ntpd or the initscripts) ? Maybe this is useful to have fixed upstream, but I prefer to hear second opinions before trying to be smart :) Kind regards, -- dag wieers, dag at wieers.com, http://da...
