net rpc vampire, profiles, SIDs oh my!
Ok. I am trying to "net rpc vampire" from my current AD domain into a
ldapsam password backend so I can get the user SID to preserve profiles.
I am aware that HKEY_USERS holds that SID as well. In my test
environment, the SID for userA in the AD domain when taken from
HKEY_USERS and put into userA's ldap entry as sambaSID preserves the
profile correctly, also the last digits of the SID for userA are 1007.
That same userA has a SID ending in 3018 when pulle...

on their existing PC. The problems are what I think are registry
permission errors. For instance, My Documents fold redirection doesn't
work (which is a change in the registry to their new folder location),
unable to change desktop settings, etc. I think what is happing is that
HKEY_USERS is still owned by DOMAIN\old_username and I need to add full
control to DOMAIN\new_username before moving them to the new username
account.
Is my thinking correct and has anyone else had this problem?

https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2010-March/msg00129.html
Here is the three part patch to reimplement virt-win-reg to support

Sadly that doesn't work. All that does is set the registry entry in

What are the implications of locking the ntuser.dat file on the user's

How Is Administrator Treated?
...USRMGR.EXE or SRVMGR.EXE I can see
things, but can't change them ("Access is denied").
Second, what about Windows SID's? Administrator should be S-1-5-domain-500;
but if I log on as Administrator at an NT or Win2K workstation and look in
the registry, I can't see that SID in HKEY_USERS. How is this set up in the
Adminstrator account profile (roaming profiles are in use)?
I'm pretty sure that once I "grok" this stuff all the other minor system
management problems will fall into place. Thanks in advance for any
responses.

I've got several machines 98SE machies, but not all, that reboot after you
enter your username and password on the login screen and hit enter. No
noticable pause. The account used doesn't matter, and only 2 do it
consistently. The rest do it only sometimes or for most of the workstations,
work just fine. I'm using a Samba 3.0.6 as a NT

Newbie: any hope of running a dongle-protected app? Aladdin HASP on LPT1...
Hi,
I'm a complete Wine newbie, still in the "Shock and Awe" stage... so
apologies for obvious stupidities. I'm trying to run a VB6 app, probably
1999-vintage, under Wine. It is protected by a parallel port dongle from
Aladdin. The app installs, the HASP drivers (latest version) apparently
install, but when I run the app it tells me "HASP device driver not

Can't fetch domain SID
Hi,
I happened to delete /etc/samba/secrets.tdb. Now I can not get DOMAIN
SID by run:
net getlocalsid
Any idea how to recover it? Do I need to reinstall the whole Samba suite?

getting SID on a Samba 2.2.2 domain
Replacing an old Samba 2.2.2 server with a newer Samba version, and would like to set the SID to the same as the old server. However, 2.2.2 doesn't have the 'net' utilities or anything else that I can find to display the SID. Anyone have any hints?
Thanks,

Way to salvage profiles after domain rejoin?
Somehow my workstations lost their connection to
the domain recently. I can rejoin them, but when
I leave the domain and rejoin the previous user
profiles are lost. Well, the data is still on
the system, but all pre-rejoin domain profiles are
listed as "account unknown" in the profile manager.
I know I can probably use the Files and Settings

I'm currently test WinXP and Win2K against Samba 2.2.6. While I've got

Is this possible under Samba, and if so how. Any help will be greatly
