The VM as a way of saving our digital heritage
Some of the discussion items I have seen about VM's failing under upgrades brings up a worrisome point, for me at least. I look at a VM as a 'forever machine'. A way in which I can set up an environment with any old OS and software and be able to boot and interact with it now, or next year or 100 years from now. It is the answer to 'how do we guarantee access to our digitized

Corel heritage applications
I understand that the applications that Corel release for Linux are WinXX apps tweaked to run under Wine. I have no problem with that, but it makes me wonder what success has been achieved running Corel Win apps. Sure beats upgrading if they still do the job you want. The applications that interest me are: WordPerfect version 7.0.2.19 Quatro Pro version 7.0.2.14 Corel Ventura

Import fixed-format ascii file with mixed record types
I need to import several ascii files in fixed format with two different record types. The data comes from European Labor Force Surveys, wich is a household survey. The first record type is for people over 16 years, and the second much sorter is for people aged 15 or less (this record has a filler with several blanks to get the same record length). The files tipically have 160000 records, with 176

IP printing to Jetdirect boxes
All, Hey hey, am new so if this is way basic, flame on. ;-) I have a Dell Poweredge 2300 running RedHat 6.0 and whatever versions of samba and such that are part of that distribution. Samb 'works' from the standpoint of file sharing and printing in a sense. The issue is that the printer is an HP Laserjet 4 connected via an external HP Jetdirect box running IP. access to 'formula' terms in a user function
This is probably buried somewhere in the R help archives, but I've been unable to find it, so perhaps the keywords I use here will help bring the topic to the surface more easily for future users. I want to write my own modeling function (ultimately for some multidimensional windowing - but this question is on scripting basics). For purposes of figuring out my needs, lets just consider

Stucked with as.numeric function
Hi list, I have problems with the as.numeric function. I have imported probabilities from external data, but they are classified as factors as str() shows. Therefore my goal is to convert the colum from factor to numeric level with keeping the decimals. I have googled the problem for a while now and kept to several advices like

Every time I edit a particular page, a bit of javascript myseteriously shows up when I save it. set heatmap.2 color ranges
Hi all, I have a matrix with values between 0 and 1. I want to plot this matrix on a heat map so anything >0.05 is blue, anything <=0.05 and >0.01 is yellow, and anything else is grey. I am using the heatmap.2 function. I searched around but did not find an efficient way to set colour ranges as I described. Could anybody give some hints? Thank you in advance. Wendy -- View this

bargraph.CI change se for sd
Hi there, I am a beginner. I would like to change the error bars in the bargraph.CI function from the default (se) to (sd). The help file says ci.fun= function(x) c(fun(x)-se(x), fun(x)+se(x)) Is there a simple way of telling the function what (x) precisely is - I already define in in the of the bargraph.CI function and assume that is should be able to use that information. cheers, Herwig --
