external journal device
I'm trying to setup an external journal device, but it won't mount as ext3. I can only mount it as ext2. Everything seems happy when I run the commands. It will work when I don't use the external device. This is on RH7.2, linux-2.4.18-rc2. [root@dhcp4 root]# mke2fs -O journal_dev /dev/hdb5 [root@dhcp4 root]# mke2fs -j -J device=/dev/hdb5 /dev/hdb6 [root@dhcp4 root]# mount -t ext3 /dev/hdb6 /home mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdb6, or too many mounted file systems [root@dhcp4 root]# mount /dev/hdb6 /home [root@dhcp4 root]# ls /home lost+found [root@...

What's going on with my Linux Swap?
I've tried to create a Linux swap file, but when I run fdisk, it looks like this: Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdb1 * 1 3644 29270398+ 83 Linux /dev/hdb2 3645 3737 747022+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/hdb5 3645 3737 746991 82 Linux swap Why is this W95 partition existing in the same place as my Linux swap? I would have thought they'd be incompatible. Can my Linux OS use this Linux swap? Does this need cleaning up, and if so how? Dave

Can USBstikA boot USBstkB ?!
...to you were also theoretical and very generic. For example, your old Slackware's kernel (+ initrd files) might had been located in the same boot stick, and the boot command _might_ had included some indication for the kernel (+ initrd) to find the "root" partition (e.g. root=/dev/hdb5 or something else). But, as I tried to explain before, this "hdb5" varies depending on the BIOS; in other words, it is not always "portable" when changing connections or when moving to another PC. I hope you find some way to access your OS/files, whether with Syslinux or wi...

Major problem with software raid
Ok, this is the case: I've got two raid-5 arrays with software raid, both with three disks. Setup: md0 has hdb2, hdd1 and sda1 md1 has hdb5, hdd3 and sda3 Tonight, the system lost power due to a power spike. The result was a reboot where it attempted to fix the raid, but it didn't exactly work. I have now booted a live CD and using utilities there. It seems the checksum value is slightly off for all disks. And the update tim...

reading ufs2 filesystems with centosplus kernel
...-8.1.8.el5 and i'm trying to read a drive that has a ufs2 partition on it. It was originally in a FreeBSD machine and has some data i'd like to get at. Googling indicated this should work with the command: mount -r -t ufs -o ufstype=ufs2 <device> <mountpoint> device is /dev/hdb5 and mountpoint is /mnt. I'm getting an error unknown filesystem type ufs. I'm assuming i have to load a module of some kind. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Dave.

Hi, I don't like to start messages out this way and this is my opinion but i'm really beginning to hate lvm. With that out of the way here's the situation. I have a centos 4.4 drive with two partitions on it, one an hd*1 partition former /boot ext3 partition, which i can read fine, but which doesn't have the data i want. I've got some data on an lvm volume /dev/hd*2

Since I've now only got a laptop, I mostly use TinyCore linux; which is also sysylinx booted; and makes provision for *THE SLOW REACTION TIME OF SOME USB DEVICES*; which may be the subtle cause of my problem in trying to boot a second USBdevice [other than the <boot device>]. High all, In WinXP, I have created file "image.iso" using mkisofs, but unable to postprocess with the "isohybrid". I worked as follows: cd F:\syslinux-4.05\utils F:\syslinux-4.05\utils> isohybrid F:\image.iso and received >'isohybrid' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. What next? Thanks in advance.
