allocating factor levels
Dear R users,
I am working on allocating the rows within a dataframe into some
factor levels.Consider the following dataframe:

Rsync Optimization for Long Haul Links
Rsync speed seems to be effected more by latency than bandwidth, why is
this?
I have been happily rsyncing all over the world for some time, but today I
had cause to sync 40GB of data to all our remote sites causing me to look
closer at the statistics.
We effectively pull data using.
rsync -az --delete --force hqserver::filesystem /export/sync/filesystem
Our network is a 20Meg+ T3 at HQ and a

T1 to cross connect remote PBX and asterisk
Looking for someone with a successful experience similar to this;
I have a need to cross connect a 3COM NBX PBX PRI interface to asterisk,
but over a long distance. We do not need any IP connectivity and the
solution requires G.711u audio so there is no benefit to using IP.
Has anyone here successfully cross connected any PBX PRI interface
expecting NI2 PRI signaling B8ZS/ESF with an

Controlling SO_RCVBUF
I have a customer who is complaining about slow SFTP transfers over a long haul connection. The current transfer rate is limited by the TCP window size and the RTT. I looked at HPN-SSH, but that won't work because we don't control what software the peer is using. I was thinking about coding a much more modest enhancement that just does SO_RCVBUF for specific subsystems. In the interest

Digium FXS specifications and limits Question
Howdy All,
I'm considering Asterisk / Digium as a replacement to my existing phone
switch. I need to continue to be able to push analog lines between
multiple buildings in a campus environment.
The Digium Analog 410 Card manual states it's not recommended to go
beyond 1500 feet distance for an FXS card, and no line should leave the
building or be bundled. The 2400 Series Manual does

Gnome-shell memory
So after much research it seems the only way to "help" the gnome-shell
memory leak issue (I still see it on CentOS 7.6) is to do "export
DISPLAY=:0.0; gnome-shell --replace" periodically. Perhaps in cron.
Is that an OK solution for the LONG haul? Seems to knock the memory back
down and box appears to keep running.
Thanks,
Jerry

input_userauth_request() vs. stateful authmethods
...sation, these checks are
skipped, unless they are duplicated by the authmethod. For example, in
auth2-chall.c, some of the code is duplicated (logging, sending the
reply), but the root special case is skipped.
One way to fix this, and make life easier for authmethods that require
some state to be hauled around, is to take all the post-authmethod stuff
currently in input_userauth_request(), and put it after the call to
dispatch_run() in do_authentication2(). That would simplify that code
(it's currently mostly conditional on 'authenticated') and ensure that
the root & other tests g...

Voice Over WiFi
Hello all,
this is not really an * question but it is somehow related, i am trying to
develop a working proposal for cheap and quick telephony services using Voip
running over *. By running a wireless network (over 802.11 a/b/g devices),
i plan to be able to reach customers directly with eithe table top or
handheld 802.11 sip enabled phones.
But the disadvantage is that how do i power each radio

crashing R through lattice
I have been crashing R while using lattice. My system consists of a Mac
Intel, R 2.5.1, lattice 0.15-5, and I plot through the default quartz.
R crashes after plotting several lattice functions. Has anyone else
encountered this problem and does anyone know the cause, or a solution?
Is this a lattice:mac, lattice:quartz, Lattice:me issue?
example...
This crashes my system after plotting.

--color doesn''t work with --drb w/rspec_autotest
If I got this to work, do you think we could/should check in
rspec_autotest into rspec?
I''ve updated rspec_autotest abit, so let me know if you''d like the
modified code.

confidence intervals with glmmPQL
Hi - I am using R version 2.13.0. I have run several GLMMs using the glmmPQL
function to model the proportion of fish caught in one net to the total
caught in both nets by length. I started with a polynomial regression full
model with three length terms: l, l^2, and l^3 (l=length). The length terms
and intercept were the fixed effects and the random effect was a paired haul
(n=18).

Radio interfaces for Asterisk - ISO image distro
I just ran across these guys - looks very interesting:
http://xelatec.com/xippr/install
They distribute a self-installing ISO with Asterisk, FreePBX, and some
pre-built software to do "radio over IP". You'll need to buy the USB
radio hardware, but it looks really interesting as a pre-built system
for radio trunking using some of the Asterisk capabilities. There is

dovecot-auth consumes 100% CPU time on Solaris 10
Is problem with CPU load solved?
I have same problem - dovecot-auth eats one of my cores.
I'm using dovecot 1.0.7 on Solaris 10 Sparc.
I tried to use auth-bind and standard scheme with separate user for bind and
have same result.
Problem occupts only with LDAP authentication, on some other systems I use
PostgreQSL and MySQL authentication and doesn't have this problem.

Why still no PKCS#11 ECC key support in OpenSSH ?
PKCS#11 support for ECC should have been integrated years ago. Let's not complicate it now, just integrate the existing patches so that people stuck with EC keys at least can use them somehow...

Extracting Rails Model into a GEM
I presently am refactoring an a Rails App that has not only the
standard RoR web front end, but also agents which share the same model
and run on different machines. In the past the whole rails app was
just deployed on other machines even though only the model was used. I
am trying to improve the situation by extracting the model into a gem
which depends only on ActiveRecord and then requiring the

Samba4 reaches the "Susan" stage
Samba4 reached an important milestone tonight, as I installed it for
my wife to use as her file server for all of her important documents,
email, the book she is working on etc.
Those of you who have been around Samba development for a while will
know that my wife tends to be the first test user of major new
versions of Samba, and she volunteered again this time. Susan played a

[LLVMdev] Pattern matching questions
I was able to resolve my previous question about dealing with custom
loads/stores, and following Chris' suggestion, the IBM Cell SPU backend
can generate code for "int main(void) { return 0; }" without crashing
llc. There's a lot of work still to be done... like getting frame
offsets correctly computed and hauling in the raft of intrinsics that
the Cell SDK defines.

RFC: On removing magic numbers assuming 8-bit bytes
A. This RFC outlines a proposal regarding non-8-bit-byte support that
got positive reception at a Round Table at EuroLLVM19. The general
topic has been brought up several times before and one good overview
can be found in a FOSDEM 2017 presentation by Jones and Cook:

In a nutshell, the proposal is for the llvm community
