[LLVMdev] Using the unused "version" field in the bitcode wrapper (redux)
...r example, a new key letter 'g' in the Data Layout. This is not a bitcode ambiguity so MODULE_CODE_VERSION is unchanged. - We as a vendor publish toolchain #13 based on SVN r300000. - Some middleware provider publishes libIncrediblyUseful.bc built using spiffy new toolchain #13. - Some hapless game developer tries to use libIncrediblyUseful.bc but is still on toolchain #12. This causes an error during some LTO build phase, of course; the question is, what kind of error and how does Hapless Game Developer know what to do? We as compiler developers want to see something along the li...

[LLVMdev] [PATCH] fix warning: 'NumFolded' defined but not used
...s comment says that something should be folded. SmallVector<unsigned, 2> Ops; Ops.push_back(OpNum); I don't understand the usage of Ops. Seems not to be used at all. // It looks like we can't fold this virtual register load into this // instruction. Force some poor hapless value out of the register file to // make room for the new register, and reload it. And this comment says that it can't have been folded, so the first comment seems to be superfluous. PhysReg = getReg(MBB, MI, VirtReg); } --- svn.llvm.orig/lib/CodeGen/RegAllocLocal.cpp +++ svn.ll...

User Manager for Domains -- Groups not showing
...n LDAP backend that I configured myself (with some help). Recently I have had to add about 300 more users to my system and now I need to get a slightly less technical person to help me manage the accounts. I've been happily using smbldap-tools all of this time, but when I showed what I do to my hapless trainee, her eyes started to glaze over. So as an alternative I'd like to start using the 'User Manager for Domains' in the SRVTOOLS.EXE archive. She might find the point and click of it all more friendly. Only thing is, when I start up User Manager, I can see all the users, but I can...

folder permissions with Windows client, Samba server
...modify the folder or files in it without difficulty). Worse, if the Windows user attempts to SET permissions on the folder, the folder will end up with a completely different (and generally completely unusable) set of permissions; chmod 700 and chown root, if I recall correctly - so then the hapless user who tried to set permissions on a folder that he or she could access just fine is locked out of that folder completely until someone shells into the Samba server and resets permissions from the command line. I have seen this exact behavior on Samba 2.x / FreeBSD 4.x, 5.x, and 6.x, both wi...

(2) Help editors find the cited document by (a) explicitly providing a citation link on the main web page for the R-project and (b) referencing the cited document on the web site by the name under which it is cited. Imagine the hapless editor following the R-project link expecting to find a document called "R: A language and environment for statistical computing." They then Google the ISBN number and find it referring to multiple versions of the software. <grin> With regard to the citation link, I recommend that i...

...statistically-adept students to think about underpaid, but life-altering, internships for the summer of 2012. In fact, after November 1st it may be too late to apply here at Barron's. This will be the second summer we've offered paid internships, which means that applicants can now poll the hapless folks who interned this past summer. Contact me, Bill Alpert, and I'll put you wise. Meanwhile, here's the public service announcement: Do some good. deleting Cyrus mailbox with empty name
A junior administrator of mine mistakenly created a mailbox with an empty name, by typing into cyradm the commands: createmailbox user/$lb setquota user/$lb 10000 He will of course shortly receive an extra lesson on shell variables, but meanwhile I find myself confronted with the problem how to get rid of the mailbox he created. So far all attempts have failed: [cyrus at posthamster ~]$

Memory Footprint issues

I suppose one could go through it, checking through everything. Then again, maybe Vorbis isn't really bloated decoding streams and I've just made a hapless assumption.
