Workers sleeping habbits
I''m having some issues with Workers dying after a period of several hours. Each worker runs a loop that asks Amazon SQS for work to do. If there is a message in the queue the work is completed (image processing, etc...); if there is no message the worker will sleep for X seconds (sleep 10, etc...). I''ve noticed that the workers will frequently exhibit two negative

UW-IMAP -> Dovecot : patch to remove nasty "internal messages" from UW-IMAP ?
Hello there, We want to move from UW-IMAP to Dovecot (mbox format), works like a charm, but UW-IMAP has that bloody habbit to make a stupid message in all his mailbox files : From MAILER-DAEMON Thu Apr 19 10:30:01 2001 Date: 19 Apr 2001 10:30:01 +0200 From: Mail System Internal Data <MAILER-DAEMON at mailhub2-vil.isdnet.net> Subject: DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE -- FOLDER INTERNAL DATA Message-ID: <9876690...

updating one's own package
Win7 x64, R2.14.1 Dear list, I would like to get into the habbit of creating a package for each project. That way I can package my project-specific functions and data together and load or unload that at will. Also, it will allow easy navigation through all the functions I will have available for each project, since I can then use ?myfunction and immediately...

CentOS 4.3 Server spontaneously rebooting (over and over again)
...;s April 2006 issue) gives me the same results. In doing so I noticed that it took a might long time to load my SCSI drivers and after removing both SCSI adapters (just connected for oldish CD- and tape-drives) it got a little better for just a few hours. Now my system is back to his anoying reboot habbit during the boot-process I've juggled around with the memory because sometimes the reboot occurred during initialization of the RAM disks. I was also starting to think that it may have to do something with networking activity because when it (only now and then) comes up properly, I can login (...

Confirmatory Factor Analysis in R? SEM?
Hi Has anyone used R to conduct confirmatory factor analysis? This email pertains to use of SEM. For context consider an example: the basic idea is that there are a bunch of observables variables (say study habbits, amount of time reading in the bus, doing homework, helping other do homework, doing follow-up on errors etc.) and one believes that all these variables maybe measured by two or more unobservable constructs... say ability to work hard and ability to follow instructions. If one has empirical eviden...

Automating message archiving
...else. To 1) Several people love to store each single mail, but because the system becomes very slow when they open a mailbox with, day, 5000 messages (Mozilla even core dumps sometimes); they archive the mails by year or month, if they got elder than, say, 6 month. I do not want to discuss this habbit, it's like it is and I have the trouble with it. To 2) There is the doing of dropping all messages flagged as SPAM into a specific folder. It would be nice if the does messages are deleted, when they grew get elder. To 3) I don't grasp the idea, but it seems that notebook users want to...

initramfs scripts + cpio archive stuff
...detection of gzip vs romfs vs ext2 vs minix. If this feature is required, we may have to look at file(1). I've already looked at file(1) around klibc 0.17 time, and it wasn't anywhere clean enough for klibc. 3. do we need to worry about initrd support? initrd has this nasty habbit of wanting to change the root device that should be mounted by poking a device number into some random /proc/sys file (yuck). Obviously this isn't going to be portable to initramfs. I'd argue that initrd support is obsolete with initramfs in the kernel. 4. running other scrip...

win2008r2 update on centos 6 host made system unbootable
...e new Virtio driver is incompatible only with the older Kernel of CentOS 6 and that this wasn't properly tested. To verify this one could check if the same thing happens on a CentOS 7 Host but at the moment I'm to busy the check this. Regards, Dennis Regrettably Microsoft has picked up the habbit of giving out buggy patches. Sysadmins are becoming betatesters. I wish I could test it but haven't got no C7 host yet. Centos 8 minimal install
Hi R C. The resulting installation is smaller than the image that you download through FTP, etc. When I first installed this OS during version 5, I was amazed that the installation took a mere fraction of the time it took to go through the menu. Heh. Anyway, give it a whirl as it?s quick. I?m assuming you mean a headless installation. Oh and I?m top posting because it?s logical.

Using a DIV or SPAN for a content_tag (link_to_remote)
...perhaps using a SPAN or DIV. I see follow the chain in the source code and I guess I could write my own helper, but I was wondering if there was a way to do this already? I know already that SPAN''s and DIV''s are not supported onclick containers in IE 6, but it''s habbit for me to use them. Currently I have done something like this which puts an a tag around my SPAN. Feedback? <%= link_to_remote( content_tag("span", "", :class => "cssrulz"), { :url => { :controller => "bla", :action =...

what hardware to choose from?
...alogic D-41D to provide IVR and voice mail services). But I don't know how they are interfacing with IP network. And configure a box with 4 cards can be much higher price than use a gateways. But I see that a lot of people on this list using telephony cards. Can you tell me, is this a personal habbit or there are hidden pros of telephony cards that I don't know about? And what I should choose for our project : gateways or cards? Any comments is greatly appreciated. Best regards, Nguyen

Benchmark Disk IO
What is the best way to benchmark disk IO? I'm looking to move one of my servers, which is rather IO intense. But not without first benchmarking the current and new disk array, To make sure this isn't a full waste of time. thanks

Samba 3.0.33/3.2.15 AD joined slow initial connect with LDAP backend
I'm hoping someone can help me with the following. I currently have 2 Samba fileservers version 3.0.23d joined to our corporate Active Directory. Clients currently are Windows XP. I'm asked to prepare to migrate XP to Windows 7. From testing it looks like Samba 3.0.23d is not compatible with Windows 7. Therefor I started testing with the latest RHEL5 version 3.0.33-3.1e.el5 on RHEL5.

I thought I read somewhere that you no longer have to do a special make command for the 2.6 kernel. Is this true, or should I still make linux26? Port scan from Apache?
Hi everyone, today I got an e-mail from a company claiming that my server is doing port scans on their firewall machine. I found that hard to believe so I started checking the box. The company rep told me that the scan was originating at port 80 with destination port 8254 on their machine. I couldn't find any hints as to why that computer was subject to the alleged port scans. Burning DVD with files>4GB from console
My backup script split filesystem dumps to files with size of 4,37 GB (4 588 544 kB). It's just an optimal size to fill out DVDs. At this moment I have to burn them from windows via smb-link becuase I didn't manage to do this task from FreeBSD console due to 2GB/4GB filesize restrictions (growisofs). I'm using freeware CDBurnerXP to burn my backups (ISO9660/UDF/Joliet), and they
