FreeBSD tar errors on valid empty tar.gz
...39;s tar implementation has a bug where it can create archives it cant read back. This can be seen by simply creating an empty tar.gz file and then trying to expand or list it. In doing the above you get the following error: tar: Unrecognized archive format: Inappropriate file type or format N.B. gtar can list and expand the created file without issue. schily tools
Hey folks, I'm reading up on gtar for tape archiving and it sounds kind of nasty and not something I really want to rely on. It looks like star from the schily tools is preferred. I'm using Centos (and RHEL) 5.7 which seems to have star but not sdd. Which leads me to believe that the Schily tools are maybe a bit "rogue&...

gtar compression achieved
Hey folks, I looked at the man page and don't see any way to do this - maybe it is a function of the compression program used I dunno. Is there any way to get gtar to report on the compression it achieved? I can't just check file sizes because I'm writing data to tape. The basic problem is that I know how much data is there to begin with but I don't know how much room it took up on the tape so I have no idea how much room is left on the tape. t...

Restoring from an smbclient/gtar archive?
Hi all, I recently used smbtar (Samba Version 2.0.4) to create a tar file "backup" of an NT filesystem. However, when using GNU tar to extract the tar file, I get a little ways into the 'tar xvpf ../file.tar' command and get a whole bunch of errors: tar: Read error on ../file.tar: Invalid argument tar: Read error on ../file.tar: Invalid argument tar: Read error on

zfs and backup applications
Hi, I was wondering if there have been any conversations with backup vendors like Veritas or EMC regarding better integration with ZFS. While I understand they can use the "native" mode of reading files from the filesystem, it would be great if there were agents that had options like making a snapshot and storing a "zfs backup" datastream that could be used for zfs restore.

How to have ZFS root with /usr on a separate datapool
.../libc.so.1 /zfsroot/lib. Now you can have /usr, /opt, /var and /home on a separate raidz zpool. My zfs root takes only 500 megs and sits nicely on two 1 gig USB flash disks. zfs create tank/usr zfs set mountpoint=legacy tank/usr mkdir /mnt/usr mount -F zfs tank/usr /mnt/usr /usr/sfw/bin/gtar Ccp /usr . | /usr/sfw/bin/gtar Cxp /mnt/usr echo >>/zfsroot/etc/vfstab tank/usr - /usr zfs - yes - If you move /var to a separate partition, make sure you keep /var/run directory in your zfs root. Tested on b75a and b75a xVm should also work with b70, etc. kugutsumen You can find a pa...

Does smbtar have a size limit ?
...Unix box ? Because I will be eventually able to NFS mount a 100Gb partition from a Cray, and have the tar.file(dump) migrated out to a multi-terrabyte Quad-DLT7000 tape storage array. Nice. Also, does anyone know how to introduce some compression into the smbclient/smbtar process ? If you install gtar, smbclient still rejects the -z (compression ?) option. It would also be nice to tell it to use gtar instead of tar, without having to overwrite the system "tar" binary, with gtar. Oh, and one last thing, does anyone know of an NT utility that can dump NTFS security permissions (ACLs) fo...

Is Amanda "vaulting" what I need for archiving data?
...e up with anything much. Then I went browsing around the Amanda website and found "vaulting" and was wondering whether this would suit my needs. I'm basically searching around for a backup solution and trying to decide whether to use something off the shelf or just roll my own with gtar. It is important to me that my solution use standard tools like dump/restore / gtar on the back end, which is how I ended up at Amanda. In looking through some of the initial configuration how-tos it seemed as though this was massively over-complex for my application. But then I hit upon "v...

heavily fragmented file system.. How to defrag it on-line??
...rag tool can not handle ext3. A thrid-party commercial tool oodcmd doesn't help as well since it can only deal with idle unmounted file systems, neither can it guarantee data integrity. For that case, I mean, when the machine is booted into repair mode and file system is not in use, We can use gtar to save|restore data without data loss, so the commercial tool can not do almost no help for us. Anyone have any ideas on defraging ext3 file systems on-line? Thanks a lot. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------...
