separate a variable in several variables
Hello R users,
Imagine the data frame DATA with the variable x which is composed by numeric
and alpha caracters.
> DATA
x
1 12F
2 13 AD
3 356PO
4 1D
5 GRT
6 PO52
7 LN4Z
Is there a way to separarate x in 2 variables:
y: only numeric caracters
z: only alpha caracters
For exemple:
x y z
1 12F 12 F
2 13 AD 13 AD
3 356PO 356 PO
4 1D 1 D
5 GRT 0 GRT

Is there any pitfall between platforms?

Minor glitch in optim()
...t surprised me
that I haven't noticed this before, but optim() is inconsistent in how it
deals with bounds constraints specified at infinity. Here's an example:

fnt <- function(x, fscale=10){
yy <- length(x):1
val <- sum((yy*x)^2)*fscale
}
grt <- function(x, fscale=10){
nn <- length(x)
yy <- nn:1
# gg <- rep(NA,nn)
gg <- 2*(yy^2)*x*fscale
gg
}
npar <- 4
lower <- -Inf
l2 <- rep(-Inf,npar)
a1 <- optim(x0, fnt, grt, lower=lower, method="BFGS") # works

[ronvdaal@zarathustra.linux666.com: Possible security issue with FreeBSD 5.4 jailing and BPF]
...7PM 0:00.04 tcpdump
- -i fxp0
The P_JAILED flag is set.
Conclusion:
Usage of devfs rulesets is highly recommended as stated in the manpages.
Though a misconfiguration at this point would expose a big security issue.
The question is: should bpfopen() in bpf.c check for a jailed proc or not?

OpenSSH-3.9p1 permanently_set_uid behavior on Linux
Aloha,
I'm curious about the following code at line 203 in uidswap.c:

(setgid(old_gid) != -1 || setegid(old_gid) != -1))
fatal("%s: was able to restore old [e]gid", __func__);
This causes permanently_set_uid to fail in the following case:

Package 'fCalendar'
Dear,
I'm a master student mathematics at university Gent, who's writing a thesis about vines and copula's.
I'm in trouble with the package 'fCalendar' which I need for running 'QRMlib'.
The problem is that 'fCalendar' doesn't have a namespace. I need to use R.2.14.1 because
I also need the package 'vines' which only works for R.2.14.1.

Question about performance difference between samba4 versions
...ric transfer rates (normal read/write operations) are no problem, I
only notice the drop in performance rate while doing an explicit move of
(50+) files from one subdirectory to another. Source and target share is
the same. Such a move operation should be close to instant.
Did I miss something?
Grt,
