Accessing a MAC address from inside the VM?
Greetings, I have a very simple problem, but the resolution is proving rather complex. Bare with me, I will attempt to explain. I have a host machine with no GUI. I attach an existing .img file to the host machine and need to change the MAC address (since the image was created on another machine). Is there a way from with in the guest to do this or do I have muck with the XML? And if I muck

Granted, Ryan Ashley has a Very Valid Point and I agree wholeheartedly about "Any idiot who opens a pif, exe, bat, com, or any other executable file deserves what they get." and would actually encourage these feeble minded folks to "Please, Open it and Darwinate your dumb self

no more wedged mongrels with fastthread
With Mongrel 0.3.18, I have not seen a single one of the hangs that I have been grousing about for the past N weeks. Thanks MenTaLguY and Zed! Q: Mongrel loads fastthread, Mongrel loads Rails, Rails loads OCI8, OCI8 requires ''thread''. That means OCI8 is using fastthread too, right? Steve

bwplot and panel.bwplot
Hello, I am trying to use "bwplot" to display whisker boxes according to some conditioning factors ("age" has two values 1/2). I get the following messages: > library(trellis) > bwplot(dvk95~age|site*season,panel=function(x,y){panel.bwplot(x,y)}) Error in tapply(1:0, structure(list(INDICES = numeric(0)), .Names = "INDICES"), : arguments must have

Fitting a mixed negative binomial model
Dear list members, I want to fit a nonlinear mixed model using the nlme command. My dependent variable takes the form of event counts for different countries over a number of years, and hence I was going to fit a mixed effects negative binomial model. The problem, as far as I can glean from Pinheiro & Bates 2000, is that I need a model that is not normal in the errors. All the models they

Mongrel 0.3.15 PR -- All The Fixes Good For You
Hi folks, Getting much much much closer to the 1.0 release. I have some documentation to work on tonight, and I need to go through the patch queue one more time, but I''ve put up another pre-release for people to test. What this pre-release does is pull together the various patches, monkey patching, and alternatives that make Mongrel either faster or more stable. It is also the start

Increasing address pool reuse/reducing .o file size in DWARFv5
On some previous occasion that introduced additional indirection (don't remember the details) my debugger people groused about the additional performance cost of chasing down data in a different object-file section. So we (Sony) might be happier with low_pc as expressions, than with a ranges-always solution. But hard to say without data, and getting both modes in at least as a temporary

Looking for a set of definitive answers (long)
...rspective of an experienced Windows administrator): - File permissions do not behave as expected (from the viewpoint of other staff working with the server). The *nix permission bits cause a user, group, and "Everyone" entry to become permanent and persistent. There was some initial grousing over this fact as our long-time Windows admin scratched his head over why he couldn't remove these entries as he saw fit. After explaining that there would always be three settings no matter what, that they could never be deleted, and that they represented actual filesystem-level bits that...

Increasing address pool reuse/reducing .o file size in DWARFv5
I don't totally follow the proposed encoding change & would appreciate a small example. Is the idea to replace e.g. an 'AT_low_pc (<direct address>) + relocation for <direct address>' with an 'AT_low_pc (<indirection into a pool of addresses> + offset)', s.t. the cost of a relocation for the address is paid down the more it's used? How do you figure

Opening Scripts with long paths causes R 2.6.0 to crash
I am running R 2.6.0 on a PC running MS Windows 2000 Professional. After upgrading to this new version of R, I have been having problems opening scripts: opening certain scripts result in R crashing. After some experimentation, I discovered that it is a problem with the number of subdirectories in the path. For example, if the script is located in c:\Documents and

time delay in group listing on win-machines
Showing the group of a folder/file in a mounted samba share under XP(SP2)/2003R2-Server need some seconds. Only the SID of the group and the owner is shown initaly This problem occurs not on a mounted share from a Windows-Server. 'getent group' on the Samba machine (via nss-ldap from 2003-AD) works perfect. I've no idea, where should I search. Can anybody please help? Thanks.

ZFS layout on hardware RAID-5?
Greetings, I followed closely the thread "ZFS and Storage", and other discussions about using ZFS on hardware RAID arrays, since we are deploying ZFS in a similar situation here. I''m sure I''m oversimplifying, but the consensus for general filesystem-type storage needs, as I''ve read it, tends toward doing ZFS RAID-Z (or RAID-Z2) on LUNS consisting of hardware

Samba "Preferred Platform"
I have set up several OpenSuSE 10.3 File Servers... These are small environments, 5 - 15 workstations. They are purely File (and possibly Application) Servers.... All are AMD64. Since the Servers only purpose in life is to support Samba. 1.) Is there a platform Linux/Unix, where Samba is better supported...? 2.) Does Samba utilize a 64 bit environment, or is it better to install 32 bit

Mixed-effects model for overdispersed count data?
Hi, I have to analyse the number of provisioning trips to nestlings according to a number of biological and environmental factors. I was thinking of building a mixed-effects model with species and nestid as random effects, using a Poisson distribution, but the data are overdispersed (variance/mean = 5). I then thought of using a mixed-effects model with negative binomial distribution, but I have

...it.) An important secondary reason for switching to Git is for its hugely improved representation of merge operations over how Subversion operates. People like me, who hate Git and much prefer to use Mercurial, will generally be able to work with a Git repository using Hg-git, and with much less grousing than we do today using the Subversion repository and Hg-Subversion. Maybe we won't be as happy as if you picked Mercurial over Git, but we're going to be *greatly* outnumbered by the Git users who would scream bloody murder if you picked Mercurial instead. In closing, just go with Git and...
