No Instant Gratification ! Browser can''t access localhost:3000 (IR 1.4)
Hi! I''m learning Ruby on Rails with the Agile Web Development With Rails book. I have installed InstantRails 1.4 (under windows xp 2) and after doing all steps (gem updates, rails demo, ruby script/server which launches WEBrick server), I can''t access the localhost:3000 with the browser. I tried 127.0.0.1:3000 in apache config, then with my IP address 192.168.1.100:3000

Think I'm sure, but confirm: lme4 vs. nlme
...one can answer my naive and impertinent question in a friendly, helpful and informative manner[1], I would be delighted. Thanks! IPFW and icmp
I'm not a master of the internet RFCs, but I do believe icmp messages have different types. Now to enable traceroute for IPFW, I might put in a rule like this: ipfw add pass icmp from any to me However, how would I make a rule to limit icmp messages to just those used by traceroute? Can the messages be distinguished as such? A dynamic rule that exists only for the duration of a traceroute

Can Dovecot replace fetchmail?
I'm using fetchmail to grab mail for multiple accounts from an external IMAP server and drop it into local mailboxes via SMTP. It polls the remote server every two minutes. Can Dovecot replace this functionality more elegantly, using IDLE to avoid the polling necessary with fetchmail? I'd like to designate that mail for specific accounts on the external server be moved to specific

Off-topic -- an eye on a stats presentation for clinicians?
...oint set up against the expected day someone says "Mitch, could you talk for a short while to the residents on how to use statistics?" It looks good at this end, but I'd love to get at least one more pair of eyes on it. Any volunteers? -- Due to the recession, requests for instant gratification will be deferred until arrears in scheduled gratification have been satisfied.

Re: compiz Digest, Vol 7, Issue 20
...for version 1. Obviously there are always bugs, but in terms of organization, structure, method, etc. It's almost a compulsion, and it doesn't serve me too well because everyone (myself included when I am the user, not the programmer) wants the quick fix, the temporary solution, the instant gratification. So I think the fork is a good thing, because so far, what I understand is that Beryl is a tad bit more radical (not to say reckless at all), while Compiz is more calculated. I think it provides both sides of the plane: one, the long-written, efficient method and two, the quick, evolving, creative...

Power analysis for MANOVA?
Hello, I have searched and failed for a program or script or method to conduct a power analysis for a MANOVA. My interest is a fairly simple case of 5 dependent variables and a single two-level categorical predictor (though the categories aren't balanced). If anybody happens to know of a script that will do this in R, I'd love to know of it! Otherwise, I'll see about writing one

Different behavior of median and mean function - Why?
Hi together, below is a small example which produces outcome I do not understand, namely that the median function works fine on a data.frame without negative numbers, but doesn't work on a data.frame with one negative number. I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation for that or better, that I'm doing something wrong and someone could guide me how to solve it. I tried googling it,

Ruby on Rails: Up and Running: Rough Cuts Version
Anyone read the rough cuts of this book? I''m interested in checking it out because Bruce Tate''s work is always great. How does it compare to the agile books (2nd edition) in terms of timeliness, difficulty, etc. Thanks! Nathan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:

libtheora test suite
...coder and decoder functionality too. So, the point of this email is: 1) to inform about the new test suite framework in libtheora, 2) to encourage use of 'make check' and 'make distcheck', 3) to encourage people to write more tests to cover the API, and 4) to share the instant gratification of a fixing a one-line leak. If you haven't rolled your eyes too much by this point you will have realized that the noop test above didn't test the decoder. I've got some questions about that so I'll leave it for a separate email :-) cheers, Conrad.

re: Samba up, but not listening
I am confused by this paragraph: > I have looked at the Redhat firewall. I have even > tried copying its smb.conf file to no avail. smb.conf has nothing to do with the Redhat firewall. I use ipchains but Redhat likely used a more advanced firewall, that I can't really help you with much, if that is your problem. Joel

Sip to PSTN Gateway Configs
Hi, I'm trying to put together a simple gateway configuration involving Asterisk. I have a machine with 2 Digium X100P FXO cards installed and the Asterisk Software, and I have 2 Sip Phones defined. What I want to achieve is, any call arriving at FXO 1 is forwarded to Sip phone 1 only, and any call received on FXO 2 is transferred to Sip Phone 2, conversely any call originating from Sip
