System hang on Alienware 13 with NVIDIA GP106M
I do not know how to debug this situation. Nothing appears in
/var/log/messages. I miss the serial port:-(
I executed a journalctl -r, and saw an error:
kernel: nouveau 00001:01:00.0; Refused to change power state, currently
in D3
The last message before reboot was:
kernel: watchdog: Bug: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [ntpd:3265]
I have a pair of these Alienware 13 laptops, and would be

Can you try booting with a kernel command line that includes
"nouveau.runpm=0" as a debugging step.

System hang on Alienware 13 with NVIDIA GP106M
Alienware 17 r5 also with same graphics (GP106M and Intel 3e9b) does
boot from same disk. I look in hwinfo --gfxcard and it says both the
Intel (on i915) and the Nvidia (nouveau) are both present. What command
tells me which driver is being used?
Thanks.

GP106M+Intel Skylake, Kernel 4.10-rc3 : No display on HDMI or DP
Hi all,
On my recent MSI Apache Pro laptop with Intel Skylake + GP106M Nvidia chip, i am unable
to use the external HDMI and DP outputs. The outputs are available thru xrandr and can
be activated, but the connected monitors always show a black screen.
Note that the integrated LCD is connected to the Skylage GPU, while the HDMI and DP
outputs are connected to the...

...video 45056 3 i915,dell_wmi,nouveau

This shows the nouveau driver and the Intel i915 driver. Which is
running the display, and how can I control it?
The device from lspci is:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP106M [GeForce
GTX 1060 Mobile] (rev a1)
Please advise if there is a path available.

missing firmware report
...t: Possible missing firmware "nvidia/gv100/sec2/image.bin" for
kernel module "nouveau.ko"
21 of these messages in all. Where does one get the nvidia gv100
firmware? I have firmware from opensuse in /lib/firmware, but there is
no entry for gv100. My card is listed as a NVIDIA GP106M [GeForce GTX
1060 Mobile], and I do not know if not having the gv100 firmware is a
problem.
The kernel did crash trying to load the X system, so since I received
these warnings it was my first place to look. Should the kernel form
kernel.org build and execute? My system is an Alienware 13 3....
