schily tools
Hey folks,
I'm reading up on gtar for tape archiving and it sounds kind of nasty and
not something I really want to rely on.
It looks like star from the schily tools is preferred. I'm using Centos
(and RHEL) 5.7 which seems to have star but not sdd.
Which leads me to believe that the Schily tools are maybe a bit "rogue"
My basic requirement with what I'm doing is to use

I just remembered a counterpoint to this. Back in the Windows 3.0
days when windows had no tcp networking of its own, I put together a
DOS binary built from gnutar and the wattcp stack so you could back up
a windows or dos box to a unix system via rsh. And when I tried to
give it away I was contacted and told that I couldn't distribute it
because even though wattcp was distributed in source, it had other
conflicts with the GPL. As a side effect of get...

Request for Intel build of flac on Mac OS X (with ogg)
...r a Universal Installer for Mac OS X, but I
currently do not have access to an Intel Mac for that half of the
build. Cross-compiling does not seem to work, at least not easily.
I am hoping that one of you could build flac 1.2.1 with ogg support,
and then - after 'make install' - use gnutar to package up everything
that is added to /usr/local/ during the install. You can send the
tar file to me and I will manually merge this Intel build with my PPC
build and then make the Universal Installer available. But you must
make sure that you have libogg installed before you do your...

snapshots and open files
On the Amanda backup mailing list, one poster said he was having a problem
using zfs snapshots as the source file-system for backups.
Gnutar is the actual archiving program in this case.
They said that files which were open on the active file system were still
listed as open in the snapshot. This generates complaints from gnutar.
This surprised me. I thought the zfs snapshot would be a static image
and I would not expect the snapsho...

smbtar question?
Hi all,
I want to move a filesystem off of my NT server over to my Network
Appliance NFS server to then be shared via Samba. I assume the easiest
way to accomplish this would be to use smbtar. Do I then
use smbtar to extract the tar file I create with smbtar, or, can I use
gnutar? Does it matter? Am I safer sticking with smbtar?
I'm guessing that since smbtar is a wrapper around smbclient, that there
might be some magic in the smbclient portion of it. Though, just doing
a quick tar tvf of the tar.out file appears to work properly.
Thanks,

smclient-excludes

smbclient can exclude stuff via the "-X" option.
Jon LaBadie and I have tried various approaches to exclude multiple
items which may be contained in some kind of exclude-list (similar to
the exclude file amanda uses for gnutar-backups). Jon has written a
small smbclient-wrapper to feed the multiple options to smbclient, but
it doesn?t work out so far.
We found that multiple includes are supported by the "-I" option, but
it seems that there is only supported ONE exclude by the "-X" option.
It is alwa...

rsync 3-cvs missing prereqs/deps on osx
hi,
as it's been awhile since my last attempts w/ v269, i'm building the
latest rsync3-svs on osx 10.4.8; looking to see what's evolved re:

@ build, i note complaint abt a missing yodl2man, which originates with YODL.
YODL, then requires icmake.
as neither is available on osx, it's src build time.

Amanda 2.3.0.5-Samba 1.9.16p11 PC backups...
At the bottom is what I got returned from AMANDA 2.3.0.5 after patching
Samba 1.9.16p11 to give estimates. Any idea what I might not have done yet?
My disklist reads:
shokk \\thor\depot nocomp-user-gnutar
To connect successfully to that server with smbclient, I have to do this,
giving the same password that I now have in /etc/amandapass:
smbclient \\\\THOR\\DEPOT -U BACKUP
Also, the smbclient call only seems to be working for NT servers. All of
the Win95 machines reject the connection. The Win95...

Samba AD/DC crashed again, third time in as many months
Could I get some input regarding restoring ACLs? There's nothing in the
Samba wiki about what to do with the ACL archive. I've finished all of the
other steps already, what do I need to do to restore this archive?

tar question
Basic tar question:
I have created a ar file with
tar -prvf /tmp/ib_backup.tar /opt/interbase/data/*
The file has been copied to another box and I want to untar the file into
/opt/interbase/data/
I am not sure about the syntax; how to specify where I want the data to
be placed.
Here is my start of the command:
tar -xvf /tmp/ib_backup.tar #The tar file is in /tmp
