From Networkmanager to self managed configuration files
...eir
network "managed" by Networkmanager.
We just need to set an IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS servers
and we will never be changing that configuration ever again for the
entire life of the server.
Any 3-4 line script that does the job is sufficient, servers don't need
gimmicks, they're not going to be hotspotting on wireless networks, the
cable goes in, the server enters production and that's it!

General-purpose GPU computing in statistics (using R)
...to speed up computations? I would
appreciate hearing from R sages about their views on the usefulness of
general purpose GPU (graphical processing units) computing for computational
statistics. I would also like to hear about views on the future of GPGPU -
i.e. is it here to stay or is it just a gimmick that will quietly disappear
into the oblivion.
Thanks very much.
Best regards,
Ravi.

Good Bye SAMBA?!?!?
...s when they all supposedly are getting the
same AD policies.
- You found out the current AD structure was put together by a
click-monkey who understood nothing about corporate structure and
proper OU layout. For instance, he made all computers users and put
them out in a single OU and then use some gimmicks to apply, say, web
server rules to the proper machines. Those gimmicks are held by
Elmer's glue and it just started raining.
- What to do when the master AD server takes a dump. Hint: AD does not
really have multimaster replication.

SIP hardware phones
I'm trying to understand why vendors keep making 100Mbps integrated 1-port switches in their hardware SIP phones. Even the recently-announced D40 and D50 Digium phones are limited to 100Mbps. Only the more expensive models (like the D70) can run at 1000Mbps.
However, you can't expect a firm with hundreds of extensions to buy the most expensive model...
And gigabit speed is important when

LDAP for Virtual Domains
Is anyone using LDAP along with Dovecot where mail is being accessed
in the form of /var/vmail/${domain}/${user}? I have not figured out
how to extract the domain from LDAP in order to make this work. I
know this is sparse information but maybe there is an easy fix. If
not, I can post more information.

Backup PC or other solution

I don't think rdiff-backup would work with rotated drives - not really.
You could make it work to some extent with some cumbersome gimmicks, but
not perfectly. I found this thread on the subject:
http://www.backupcentral.com/phpBB2/two-way-mirrors-of-external-mailing-lists-3/rdiff-backup-23/rdiff-backup-and-rotated-external-drives-122523/
But why rotate drives? Big drives are not very expensive nowadays.

By 3-4 line script, I assume you mean the content of all the files in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts that aren't your ifcfg files?

Speex into a wav file

"The RIAA is obsessed to the point of comedy with the frustration
of having its rules broken, without considering whether such rules
might be standing in the way of increased revenues. Indeed,
Napster and Gnutella may turn out to be the two best music-marketing
gimmicks yet devised, if only the RIAA would take its head out of
its ass long enough to realise it."

interaction with hardware RAID?
It is well documented that btrfs data recovery (after silent corruption)
is dependent on the use of btrfs''s own RAID1.
However, I''m curious about whether any hardware RAID vendors are
contemplating ways to integrate more closely with btrfs, for example,
such that when btrfs detects a bad checksum, it would be able to ask the
hardware RAID controller to return all alternate

Well, it's possible to put compressed data into the WAV file instead of PCM
audio data, and set the compression-type format flag to some made-up value, but

LAS VEGAS - Internet Security VoIP Vandals

Internet telephone services like Skype and Vonage are
starting to look less like digital gimmicks and more
like the next generation of voice communication.
They're cheaper than traditional phone services and
increasingly fast and reliable. But they may also be
far more hackable.

Compile flac-1.1.1 on ppc Linux
Hi all,
I'm trying to compile the flac-1.1.1 tarball on a Linux PPC system (a G3 iBook

Configure is fine, but make bombs out almost immediately with:
