member server 3.0.23c drives me nuts
Hello everybody
First of all thanks to the developer team in providing the samba suite.
I have been running samba servers for serveral years now but 3.0.23c
just drives me nuts.
I have a PDC and BDC running samba 3.0.23c with openldap as backend and
also a samba member server trying to run 2.0.23c.
The member server is the primary file server so I can't play with it all
that much.

error installing package in linux R
I've been using R on windows for a number of years, so when
I recently installed
Linux I wanted to install R as well. Downloading and
installing the rpm's for R-Base and R-recommended went well
and I seem to have a functioning R.
I then downloaded the quadreg package and used R CMD
INSTALL to install it. All went well up to a message:

printer suddenly unavailable
Hi there
I have a pretty strange problem that pops up once in a while.
Running samba 2.2.7a having installed a Samba machine as password server
sharing user info via NIS I have a couple of printers running here at our
place. Several of them are only accessible to a select group of people so I
defined the concerned printers share as:
[PrinterX]
valid users = user1, user2, user3 ....

netbios alias and AD trouble
Hello there
I've got two samba servers srv1 and srv2
smb.conf for srv1:
netbios aliases srv1-alias
smb.conf for srv2:
netbios aliases srv2-alias
DNS is configured all right and resolves the names. Each name has got
its own IP address.
Both servers are AD members, run as expected and can be connected to via
their netbios and netbios alias names.
If, for example, srv1 fails I want to add

selection of optim parameters
Hi all,
I am trying to rebuild the results of a study using a different data
set. I'm using about 450 observations. The code I've written seems to
work well, but I have some troubles minimizing the negative of the
LogLikelyhood function using 5 free parameters.
As starting values I am using the result of the paper I am rebuiling.
The system.time of the calculation of the function is

read in data file into R
Hi
I'm trying to read a data file with output from another program (admb)
into R for further analysis. However I'm not very successfull. The file
extension for the data file is file.rep but it also doesn't help when I
change it to file.txt
I have two problems/questions:
1. The file is a single line of n values separated by a single space
tab each. These values represent a time

Sparse file support in Java?
Does anyone know if there is support in Java for creating holes in a
sparse file (like one can do via fcntl(F_FREESP) in C)? Would like to
avoid writing JNI code if there is already support for this somewhere in
the JDK.

Searching html help in 1.30
In a previous post I noted a problem using the html help search in R 1.3
using Windows 98. Further experimentation shows that search works fine in
Internet Explorer, but won't work in Netscape 4.7. When I attempt to
search in Netscape I just get a blink of the screen and then nothing. I've
noticed occasional problems in 4.7's interface with other Java programs so
this may be a

using near-zero probabilities in optimization
Hi there
I am using mle2 for a multinomial likelihood optimization problem. My
function works fine when I'm using simulated data, however my cell
probabilities of the true data for the multinomial likelihood are
sometimes very small (in some cases <0.00...) and the estimated point
estimates fit the true vlaues quite poorly. Is there a way how to handle
near zero probabilities in

change of password
Hi all,
who knows a way to change the
Samba password in the smbpasswd from
a windows client?
For example with a webinterface like swat:
User:
Old password:
New password:
Te-type New password:
Remote machine:
I don't want to use this, to enable each Samba user to
change it's password by itself.
Therefore, I can't use the swat interface directly, because
I don't want to give all

acl and winbindd woes
Hello
We have got a samba PDC and BDC running openldap as a backend and it works
pretty well.
I set up another samba File-Server and joined the domain all right.
Also set up winbindd using the idmap facility via ldap.
On the File-Server when I do a
"wbinfo -n joe" I get
"S-1-5-21-1133090748-3639176701-2116357234-1062 User (1)"

Hi there
Just a couple of questions to help me understand.
When I upgrade from 3.0.22 to 3.0.23c the access restrictions on my
shares on the member server no longer work. I read in the Changes file
"Since Samba 3.0.8, it has been recommended that all domain accounts
listed in smb.conf on a member server be fully qualified with the...."

Problem with SID
Hello all
I have a Samba-3.0.0 server configured as PDC running agains openldap.
So I have an entry of the form:
sambaSID S-1-5-21-xxxxx-yyyyy-zzzz-rid
in my dircectory
If I check the properties of a file under Windows on the PDC I get the
information all right displaying the owner
of the file as: user[Domain\user]

using mle2 for multinomial model optimization
Hi there
I'm trying to find the mle fo a multinomial model ->*L(N,h,S?x)*. There
is only *N* I want to estimate, which is used in the number of successes
for the last cell probability. These successes are given by:
p^(N-x1-x2-...xi)
All the other parameters (i.e. h and S) I know from somewhere else.
Here is what I've tried to do so far for a imaginary data set:

INTERNAL ERROR
Hi all
I have got a samba-3.0.13 (hot off the press) PDC running here that also works
as a print server printig via cups-1.1.23. As a backend I use openldap-2.2.11
What I get in my log files is what you see below. It seems this only happens
when the user prints a *.pdf file. The message shows up once in a while,
definetly not for every print job that gets submitted. Printing of those
