Centos 8 Mate?
...tly usable desktop. Every time I install a new CentOS I grit my teeth at having to remember/figure out enough of it to get me thru to the point where I can use a friendly UI. Yes, I should stop being a luddite and learn it. but, y'know, I just can't bring myself to deal with the pain. As a geezer, I guess I'm kinda set in my ways. :) Just to get the Mate installed on C8 (as was posted here recently where/how to do it) was more pain that I enjoyed going through. Now, I'm sure there are simple solutions to these issues, but I just don't want to have to stop what I'm doing to...

Resilver hanging?
How can I diagnose why a resilver appears to be hanging at a certain percentage, seemingly doing nothing for quite a while, even though the HDD LED is lit up permanently (no apparent head seeking)? The drives in the pool are WD Raid Editions, thus have TLER and should time out on errors in just seconds. ZFS nor the syslog however were reporting any IO errors, so it weren''t the disks.

Perhaps trivial problem but important to me
I have two computers: CentOS 7 (KDE 4) and CentOS 8 (KDE 5). I'm also an avid Doom player (yeah, I'm an old geezer). On C7 using prboom v 2.5.0 and a graphical interface I wrote to select a wad file to play without using the command line, everything works fine. On C8, using the same prboom 2.5.0, graphical interface, and the same SDL libraries, the video is "jerky" - every 2 seconds or so the video st...

RE: summaries (was: SUMMARY: "elementary sapply question")
Ajay, thank you very much for picking up that age-old habit of posting summaries. It existed years ago on s-help and I find it is still a great thing: I would not have bothered to read your original question nor the answers you got, but I did read the summary -- and I learned something quite interesting! Maybe some others who receive multiple non-elementary answers to their questions could

I do not employ smbpasswd or a usermap, and I can duplicate this on all of my samba machines (4) with 2 Win95 clients. This is just an itch not a problem. TIA Henri J. Configuration woes corrected
...yed this was trying a kernel compile, a sendmail 8.10.0 compile, when they failed they were a bit more vocal about why. So this is just an informational email in case anyone else get's the same problem. Sigh, I guess that is what I get for getting to bloody close to the edge. Live stream equalizer
I was under the impression that "PCM equalizer" means it only equalizes the PCM codec, i.e. WAV files. Have you noticed a significant quality improvement in the EQ for compressed media: MP3, Vorbis, MPC? starting smb services at bootup on x86 RH6.1
I am running RH6.1 on an x86 with 2.0.6 installed with an RPM. I am confused as to getting smb to start at bootup. It works fine if I start it manually (/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start). I swear, the 5.2 installation had smb start at bootup, but I can't find the difference between the two. Is the answer 1 - edit the /etc/inetd.conf file (swat needed a line uncommented) 2 - edit the

Success - Rails, FastCGI, and IIS / Windows Server
About 17:00 localtime I managed to get fastcgi, Rails and IIS all happy together. Upon success I ripped off my clothes and ran through the village yelling "The future is now!". A PDP-11 geezer stuck his head out a window and said "The future isn''t what it used to be and keep yer shirt on". Modifications were required to dispatch.fcgi and request.rb. Rails development advice
Hello, I''m new to rails but not new to programming. Yet I feel the lack of an organized environment for development is somewhat hindering my ability to learn rails thoroughly (3 console windows, text editor with a bunch of plugins, database editor and viewer, browser window opened and all this with a lot of data scattered throughout multiple files.. you get my drift..) Is this a newbie

Centos 8 Mate?
Without wanting to sound too pushy, I'm wondering if there is any update on the status of Mate now that Centos 8 has been released? I would love to jump on C8 and start playing with it, but the lack of Mate is kind of a showstopper for me at the moment. -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

off: live365 relay
Answer to your question: Live365 is strictly mp3 Much more than you wanted to know: I started using Live365 about a zillion years ago and of course it was wonderful "back in the good ole daze". After you signed up with them, you could park 365 meg of mp3s (up to 56k) and/or set up a relay (using either icecast or shoutcast) all for free. (Dirty little secret was at first, although
