CVS and Garf
Hello:
Does anyone know if Garf's tunings have been integrated into CVS yet? I
am waiting for that before upgrading.

Which encoder ver to use?
Hello,
I'm seeking advice here as I'm intend in the not to distant future to start encoding my CD collection, and I'm not sure what to use. Do I use the still current v1.0, or am I better off using a newer build? Also, I've started to notice mention of versions 1.0.1 and 1.1 in these mailing lists. Are these worth holding out for? I'll probably encode at about Q7, and am using

128k listening tests completed
http://audio.ciara.us/test/index.html
http://audio.ciara.us/test/128extension/results.html
AAC, MPC, Vorbis, WMA 9/Pro, Lame & Blade were tested at 128k vbr. MP3Pro,
AAC-Pro/Plus(?) and older versions of WMA were not tested.
Looks like Vorbis tied with AAC, MPC and WMA 9/Pro for first.
Although it was a four way tie, Vorbis was on the low end. And LAME was
only slightly lower, comming in

RC2 better than RC3? Graphed!
Well, this question comes once and again.
I have RC3 and Garf's RC2 tuned versions (160 and 350) in a nice graph.
Nobody should be surprised that RC3 is better, but in some cases GRC2 shows
better EAQUAL/bitrate results. There seems to be room for improvement in RC3
with some tweaking.

Ogg streaming on low bandwidth
Hi,
Was wondering if any gurus could tell me if it is possible to stream Ogg on very low bandwidth links (for example satellite phone) where the expected bandwidth would almost certainly be less than 19Kbps, and probably more like 10Kbps.
I am not after great audio at this bitrate, mono with an audio bandwidth less than 5KHz. I have done some testing (not streaming though) listening to 8Kbps MP3

yp.shoutcast.com 404 errors...
My icecast server (1.3.11) has been getting 404 errors for the past
couple of days from the yp.shoutcast.com server.
If I send the URL manually by telneting to the webserver at
yp.shoutcast.com I get the following response:
[chrisp@ayeka httpd]$ telnet yp.shoutcast.com 80

APPLAUD.WAV problems
...side with MPC.
BUT the APPLAUD.WAV test case
still produces **VERY** easily audible high-frequency artifacts when encoded
with OGG RC3 up to q4.9 (!!!). Things are **MUCH** better from q5.0 on.
I also noticed that Gian-Carlo's "Garf Tuned" oggencgt2
( http://sjeng.sourceforge.net/ftp/vorbis/oggencgt2.exe ) performs MUCH
better, producing q5-like results at lower bitrates:
- Oggenc RC3 with -q4.9...........168 kbps -> bad artifacts
- Garf Tuned RC2 with -b 128......171 kbps -> good quality
- Oggenc RC3 with -q5....

<p>I only have one problem now: what quality value should I use to match the
quality of Garf's tuned -b350 RC2 mode (while using lower bitrate :) )?
Ah, back to good old listening tests... :))

Ogg Traffic for September 30, 2003
...he Vorbis 1.0.1 bugfix release, and he has
moved on to more interesting things. He has started work on Vorbis
1.1, which will feature a refined encoder model, not just tuning of
existing parameters, and OggFile, among other goodies that will be
announced at a later time.
Fans of the Garf-tuned Vorbis encoder will be happy to hear that Monty
is using Garf's work wherever he can.
On the low bitrate side, Monty has some tricks up his sleeve to remedy
known problems such as the high frequency boost and the poor
performance on problem samples such as "Waiting."...

vorbis 1.1 rc 1 now tagged in SVN
Hi folks,
We're gearing up to the next full release of the Vorbis codec; I've
just tagged a release candidate in SVN in order to encourage wider
testing toward final 1.1 release.
This release includes the following updates:
1) Adoption of AoTuV and other tuning work by Vorbis developers
outside of Xiph into the mainline codebase
2) New bitrate management code
3) bugfixes

Location of fileinfo
hello there,
I just started using ogg files. And want to thank you all for this new
format.
I have written an addon for mirc (chatclient for irc chat networks) to
play and exchange soundfiles and I am almost done with implementing the
ogg vorbis format into this application.
The mirc-scriptinglanguage provides me a command to read a specified
number of bytes starting at a specified location of

What I want to know is just how he can accurately determine people are
doctoring listener counts.
In point of fact, I have a few reflectors on a couple of non-routable
networks, and none of those servers forward listerner count
information to the directory servers. There is also no simple...

improve CELT
Hi,
In paper" A High-Quality Speech and Audio Codec With Less Than 10 ms Delay", you are mention that:
There are still several ways to improve CELT, such as by incorporating better psychoacoustic masking in the dynamic bit allocation. This is a difficult problem both because there are few bits available for coding the allocation and because the analysis window is short.

OT - RE: When will quality increase be unnoticable?
In all the abx'ing and ear testing I've done in the past for my classical
and jazz music I have never seen or heard bladeenc output worse than xing.
(worse than lame, yes)
Now, to sorta keep this ON topic. I have never heard a an xing, blade OR
lame encoded mp3 sound better than a Garf tuned RC2 encode of my Jazz and
Classical stuff, (not a large sample set).
Also, I haven't used blade, lame or xing since RC3 was released. *GRIN*

Testing
Q: Is there any testing against a collection of known "hard-to-encode"
clips before new releases?
It would be an obvious thing, if you want to be serious about quality.
I brought this up because I tried latest cvs version of oggenc on one of
these standard clips I have. It's a 6 sec long clip of an applause. Heavy
noise is easy to hear with qualities 0 to 5,99. (This corresponds

Vorbisgain in OggDropPXd
Hi (hope I am in the right mailing list!)
I really can't figure out how to use Vorbisgain in OggdropXPd - it
doesn't seem to work so far.
Can Someone pls. explain detailed (steps) what to do when using
Vorbisgain in OggdropXPd?
I understand the settings for Vorbisgain are in "decoding options"...
why?
What I really want is the function of Mp3Gain on Ogg-files, and I
