Disabled adaptor causing fatal error
On by eth1 does nothing, I tried configuring Shorewall and just ignoring it, but Shorewall errors with "Unable to determine the routes through interface ''eth1''", searching high low seems to reveal I am either the first person ever to see this error, or it is so trivially overcome that it is not documented or commented upon anywhere on the internet. I tried all sorts

Still Fundraising for FreeBSD security development
Dear FreeBSD users, On April 4th, I thought that I had reached my donations target for funding my summer of FreeBSD security development, and asked people to stop sending further donations. Sadly, it seems that this assessment was premature, as it relied upon two large pledges, and it now appears that one of them will not be arriving. Fortunately, Pair Networks -- the other large donor -- has

Fundraising for FreeBSD security development
Dear FreeBSD users, Slightly more than three years ago, I released FreeBSD Update, my first major contribution to FreeBSD. Since then, I have become a FreeBSD committer, joined the FreeBSD Security Team, released Portsnap, and become the FreeBSD Security Officer. However, as I have gone from being a graduate student at Oxford University -- busy writing my thesis -- to a researcher at Simon

To You as a Nicer Person
Dear rsync: You may ask yourself > How to make people like you and respect you > How to win friends > How to let your conduct help your health, work, job, career, success, relationships, spirit, mind, well-being, ... > How to make your life smoother and happier > How to do whatever you like without being unpleasant to other people

Bountysource campaign for the M68000 backend
Hello! Almost two years ago, Artyom Goncharov submitted an initial effort for a backend for the Motorola 68000 architecture [1] which was eventually not merged, unfortunately. I elaborated why I supported the idea of such a backend [2]. Recently, we started a fundraising campaign on the platform Bountysource.com to port the M68K backend in GCC to the new MODE_CC register representation which was

Conservancy (home of Samba) needs support for GPL enforcement.
Hi all, You may not know, but The Software Freedom Conservancy is the legal home of the Samba project. However, most Linux-using corporations *really* hate GPL enforcement. To the point where they'll pull funding for diversity programs and try and get conference talks cancelled. I hope Samba users will help support Conservancy so it can continue doing vital work for us and other projects.

Online R documentation
Dear list, Many people seem unhappy with the new documentation server because you need to have R running to access it, and it's not immediately obvious how to bookmark references so they work long-term. One solution to this problem is to have a globally available website that provides access to all package documentation. I'm happy to have a go at developing this, but I need some money to

dir.xiph.org only listing Ogg streams
Everyone, I have modified the yp cgi script on dir.xiph.org to reject non-ogg streams. As the site has grown in popularity, it hasn't scaled well, and maintaining the database was eating most of the resources on the server. We did some minor tuning a few months ago which helped, but the load has continuted to grow and was affecting other more essential services. Given Xiph.org's

All Samba shares suddenly becoming read only
I have a Centos 7 server ? ZEPPO - which I use for file sharing. The clients are all Win7 PC's and I use Samba to serve the files. It has been working fine ever since I put it live late last year. Now, all of a sudden, all files are read-only. I recently added a USB WiFi dongle to give the server a presence on the WiFi VLAN. Using this I am able to provide an Air Print service for our

Centos 6 Airprint using CUPS/Avahi
I've set up another airprint server, but this time I've had to use Centos 6 because of the age of the kit I'm using - an old 1U rack server. I've configured CUPS and also Avahi. I've run airprint-generate.py and copied the .service files to /etc/avahi/services/ Everything looks fine until I try to print from my IPhone. I usually test by trying to print an email. As soon

HP laptops with CentOS 7?
I've got a HP Envy laptop and I'm fairly happy with it. The internal WiFi doesn't work with Centos but a ?5 WiFi dongle sorted that. Oddly, it still stops working once the battery drops below 50% ish. Mine is dual boot with Win8 which is pants. The biggest problem is that whenever I do much with the config, e.g. when I re-installed centos, the boot loader doesn't sort properly

dir.xiph.org only listing Ogg streams
Hi There, The nice thing of dir.xiph.org [http://dir.xiph.org/] was the fact that it supported more or less all formats, this way we were able to send out different formats, where the listener was able to choose his appriciated format from and listen to it, also the way it all got listed made it very easy for a listener to see all te streams from one station in the different formats.

dir.xiph.org only listing Ogg streams
I decided recently to change my stream from Ogg to AAC+ because I have a limited upload bandwidth and I wish to provide the best sound quality at low bitrates. If Ogg was as good ias AAC+ then I would definately use it. I'm apposed to this decision and I think it is a very bad idea. It is only the xiph directory where my potential listeners come from. I will have to switch to using

Calling Card question
I am new to the list, so if this question is redundant, please point me in the right direction for reading. I want to setup some calling cards for fundraising. I have ASTCC installed and working, but I am wondering how things might work once in production. A customer calls an 800 number (sixTel) and then dials Mexico (voipjet). This all stays IP and doesn't tie up phone lines. I've

Mac version of wxWidgets request for support
I just saw this on the wxWidgets site. They are requesting financial (and other types of) assistance to complete some major improvements in Mac support. Obviously, the better wxWidgets supports Mac, the better wxRuby will be able to do so. Presumably the improvements will show up in the wxWidgets 2.5/2.6 series, and would become available in wxRuby sometime after that. So for us, this is a

reposurgon and the conversion
My wife just got laid off - the recession has hit her law firm hard. This means my priorities have shifted to either finding more paying work myself or helping her find another job. This means the timeframe for a finished repo conversion just got more uncertain, as I may not be able to work steadily on it for a while. -- <a href="http://www.catb.org/~esr/">Eric S.
