Incorrect format of Text
Hi,
I am running Samba 2.2.8a on Solaris 8, and have shared out a directory
containing some simple text files.
The issue I am experiencing is the following:
If the files are FTP'd from the Unix box to a Windows machine and opened
using Notepad, the formatting is correct. If the same files are either
opened directly or copied (from the Samba share) from the Unix box to the
Windows machine, and again opened in Notepad, the formatting of the file is
completely messed up...

how to export and import VMware servers
I recently build a CentOS-based VMware server (the free ver) and now
need to move all of the virtual machines off my old Windows-based
VMware server (also the free ver) to this next CentOS-based one.
I have successfully FTP'd all of the files to the new CentOS box and
have even opened the server in the console Window, but cannot "start"
it. I start the machine (like I always do), and nothing happens.
Unfortunately, I cannot simply run "import", as I'm using a
Windows-based workstation to u...

read SAS file
...solve this problem. I need to get a SAS dataset into R. I’ve converted it to an .xpt file and when I try to read it I get:
> read.xport("cft2008R")
Error: could not find function "read.xport"
>
Not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’m running SAS 9.1.3 on an UNIX box. I ftp’d the file over to my C:\Program Files\R\R-2.8.0\ directory on my local machine running WinXP. Suggestions appreciated.

NIS problems after installation
...server, but the clients' ypbind services
complain that although they can find the correct server, the server does
not respond to requests.
to debug this, i've:
* pinged the server using its ip and it's name
* ssh'ed to the server using it's ip and name
* ftp'd to the server using its ip and name
* used dig to get the server's address from itself (dig @stretch
stretch.washcslab.org
* checked to see that nfs and ypserv are running
* checked to see if stretch could bind to it's own nis server
and all of these were...

ignore time completely (don't report with -i)?
$ rsync -rin --no-t --ignore-times src dst
I still get items like
<f..T...... file
Is it possible to completely turn off time synchronization? Because windows (cygwin) targets seem unable to handle them, and I'm basically using rsync -ri as a remote diff. I want to verify that ftp'd files are faithfully transferred (no CRLF bull, for example).
This obsession with times seems excessive. I care about the file contents, not the #@!%ing times.

What else do tab-delimited and csv do differently?
Until recently, I naively believed that a csv was the same as a
tab-delimited file except commas replaced tab characters (provided
of course, the characters being separated weren't either).
Evidently, that is not the case. I tried reading a tab-delimited file
(created in Excel [2000, W2K] and ftp'd as ASCII to linux) into R
platform i686-pc-linux-gnu
arch i686
os linux-gnu
system i686, linux-gnu

R or Splus?
...step() to see what it
would reduce the model to. I couldn't even get started though. I would specify
the same model again and again, with just a few of the possible variables, and
sometimes lm() would fall over and return an error message, sometimes the regression
ran fine. I got fed up and ftp'd the original tables up to a machine running
Splus, where the models ran fine, every time, with all kinds of specifications.
Is this a normal experience? Is R buggy or what? I note the other email that
R can't handle files named x. If I can use Splus, should I just do that?

/lib/modules...
...e of the things that happens during boot is that redhat doesn''t find
the right subdirectory for
the domU kernel version in its /lib/modules directory.
Traversing over into /lib/modules on the dom0, I find a likely looking
directory that matches my
domU''s kernel, and I get it ftp''d over to the dom0.
This didn''t work exactly as expected. Was it supposed to?
Joe.

Beginners help
...rs of neglection :) I want
to be able to integrate our linux boxes in out windows domain. There
are 2 reasons for this. The first reason is backup purposes. I want to
be able to access some directories on my unix boxes to copy/backup
files to my windows boxes. Until now, the linux boxes gzipped and
ftp'd the zip files to the windows boxes, but the data on the linux
boxes is becoming too much to use this method. The method makes
incremental backups impossible, too.
Thus I want to be able to access my linux harddisks from a windows
(xp) pc in our domain. Only 1 user account should be able to a...

kernel and initrd
I'm trying to create a single floppy based boot disk that will,
depending on what the user enters, boot redHat, SUSE or Debian.
Does anyone have any sample syslinux.cfg files that might allow me to
boot via nfs?
Also, I'm having trouble fitting init into initrd.img any ideas?
Thanks

looking for some advice to monitor network usage in office
Hi all,
I've been asked by a college to setup a monitor to monitor a Windows
network, but on internet usage. They want to have detailed usage, i.e.
on a per IP / PC basis, and if possible to get stats for every
protocol, and see over a period of time what goes on.
My first though wat ntop, which does all of this, but it doesn't save
the data in a DB, so if the server reboots the stats
