using rsync to keep squeeze amd64 image freshened.
Hi all, ? ? ? I tried to get my query of how to use rsync by the mailing list debian-user at lists.debian.org but the answers were not satisfactory. You can see the whole thread starting from http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2010/12/msg00651.html What I want to do is to keep the weekly amd64 squeeze build , from t its

Most efficient way to create a CentOS 3 test VM
I'm about to create a new CentOS 3 VM for testing, since we still have a bunch of deployed machines running that OS. (Don't yell at me about using old OSes. These machines won't get "un-deployed" until they fall over dead of natural causes. Until the last one dies, we need test and build VMs around to service them.) I have the CentOS 3.9 *.iso files plus a local cache

Default 4.4 kernel and NTFS?
I just installed Centos 4.4 and performed a Yum update to freshen all out-of-date files. I also have two IDE drives that are NTFS partitioned, but noticed they are not seen by the kernel. I visit /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-42.EL-i686 and copy the Makefile.bak to Makefile and run make xconfig. Reviewing the supported filesystems, ntfs is not selected. Any reason why not? What is the easiest and

Set default owner
Hi, I use the below command to freshen or fetch files: /usr/bin/rsync --rsh=/usr/local/openssh/bin/ssh -rltDv --delete $source $destination When a file is fetched (as new, and not freshened) it is created locally with owner/group as root:other, i.e. it is run as a root cron. Is it possible for newly created files to be owned by another user, even though it is running as root? Thanks, Mike

Multiple mounts instead of remounting?
I'm having issues trying to remount any shares using samba. Super Short version mount -o remount /some_windows_share creates a duplicate mount instead of properly remounting. Full details... I have many shares served off of NT4 boxes, mounted via samba on a linux box (RHEL 4). Since long dormant (>12 hour) shares from one server in particular always have problems for a few seconds when

Trying out a new version with sangoma card
Hi ! We curently have a centos 5 / asterisk 1.4 server that we have some DTMF problems with. It has a Sangoma A104d card and only port one is used to connect to the PSTN. Port 2 is conencted via a cross-over cable to a RAS for modem access and port 3 is connected for data communication via PPP. Now, I want to freshen this setup to something newer. So I installed a Scientific Linux 6 server,

rsync script for snapshot backups
Hey guys, i tried to create a simple rsync script that should create daily backups from a ZFS storage and put them into a timestamp folder. After creating the initial full backup, the following backups should only contain "new data" and the rest will be referenced via hardlinks (-link-dest) This was at least a simple enough scenario to achieve it with my pathetic scripting skills.

RFC: Add bitcode tests to test-suite
Some perhaps relevant aspects that make testing users of LLVM like Halide challenging: Halide uses the LLVM C++ APIs, but there isn't a good way to lock-step update it. So if we were to directly test Halide, it wouldn't link against the new LLVM. Practically speaking though, the LLVM IR generated by Halide should continue to work with newer LLVM optimizations and code generation. So the

dovecot 2.1.3 dsync Unexpected finish reply
I've been moving users from one system to another by doing a dsync mirror operation. The first dsync mirror takes some time, because of the number of users involved, so I am doing an initial sync, and then I direct the users to the new location and do a final 'freshening' sync to get any changes that happened during the longer sync. The problem seems to be with this freshening sync,

CentOS 4.3 (Final) : Booting Problem
Hi all, I have a problem with my linux. I updated my CentOS 4.3 (Final) - the software I updated were freetype-2.1.9-1.rhel4.4, freetype-devel-2.1.9-1.rhel4.4, gimp-2.0.5-6:1, gnupg-1.2.6-5, libwmf-0.2.8.3-5.3, mutt-1.4.1-11.rhel4:5 and sendmail. Then I restarted my PC. While booting, the system stopped and issued a message "Could not recognize the image file format for

Installed plus kernel, kudzu did not see atheros wifi
I took the dive and installed the CentosPlus kernel. I remembered that I could always boot with the old kernel if things went south. But on reboot, kudzu wanted to delete the Atheros config. I told it not to, but.... Would a simple 'freshen' of madwifi-0.9.1-24.el4.at.i386.rpm ? an rpm -qa |grep wifi returns: madwifi-kmdl-2.6.9-34.0.2.EL-0.9.1-24.el4.at madwifi-0.9.1-24.el4.at

Anyone know how centos is actually pronounced? When people I work with ask me which linux I run, I say it like the word scent - oh - s, with a sharp S on the end. How's everyone else say it? How's it supposed to be said?

freetype bytecode interpreter
It may yet be too early to get a definite answer about this, but I'm wondering what the status of the formerly patented bytecode interpreter in freetype will be in RHEL/Centos 6 and possibly future updates to RHEL/Centos 5. The patent on the technology has apparently now expired. http://freetype.sourceforge.net/patents.html and

Rsync using --daemon - how to specify port on client side for upload.
Hi, I'm not sure what whether I have constitutes a bug, but here goes; I have two scripts; one I use when my website is 'correct' and i need a copy on my mirror, in which case, I start rsync like so; rsync -avvz rsync://www.clintoneast.com:20000/clinton /home/cje/mirror/ opening tcp connection to www.clintoneast.com port 20000 receiving file list ... It works fine. However, i

RPM: any better way to reinstall only certain files?
My former primary boot disk had some bad spots appear awhile back. Damage, per rpm --verify, seems to be predominately in loss of reference files in /usr/share/doc and such as that. Being the type that wastes my own time before wasting that of others, I did a semi-careful perusal of the rpm man pages. Thought the --files or some such might offer a way ought. IIUC, nope! Seems that I can't

mp3 quality vs Vorbis 1.0?
Many of you have read and my "introduction to compressed audio with Vorbis" and given me excellent feedback. But with 1.0 about to hit the streets, I figured I'd freshen it up a bit. [ http://grahammitchell.net/writings/vorbis_intro.html ] In particular, it contains two paragraphs discussing the relative quality of Vorbis vs mp3 at a certain target bitrate. These figures seem
