forestalling kerberos for a non-kerberos user
Well... we've got this annoying message in the logs: a 5.10 nfs server complains about an nfs4_CB timeout from the client, which is running FC19. My twist is that motion - remember me fighting motion? - is the "user" whose home directory needs to be mounted, to store pics & video. It, of course, has no kerberos ticket. Ideally, I'd like to find a way to tell nfs not to check

annotating a filled contours plot with a grid of points
Dear R-help members, I am trying to plot annotate a filled contours plot (with filled.contour) with a grid of points. I have read ways of annotating it with individual points but not with grids in another matrix. Any ideas? Thank you very much. Date format on x-axis
Dear R users, Plotting question from a R beginner... When I try to plot a response through time, for example: >Date<-c("2006-08-17", "2006-08-18", "2006-08-19", "2006-08-20") >response<-c(4,4,8,12) >as.Date(Date) >plot(Date, response) The dates on the graphic appear in spanish. This I guess is the default way of plotting because my

Connections to https: URLs -- IE expert help needed
...e IE (and Windows for that matter) only when really necessary, and Firefox has simple ways to permanently accept non-verifiable certificates. I would be grateful if someone who is much more familiar with IE could write a note explaining how to deal with this that we could add to the rw-FAQ. To forestall the inevitable question: there are no plans to add https: support on any other platform, but it is something that would make a nice project for a user contribution. The current internal code is based on likxml2, and that AFAICS still does not have https: support. -- Brian D. Ripley,...

Multicolor main title in a plot or mtext
Dear R-users, the problem I'm facing today is to write a multicolor main title in a plot. I would like to have 3/4 colors to help people in the audience to visually realize what is what in a 4x2 plot array On top of each plot I would like to have two lines. The 1st line will indicate what is plotted The 2nd line will indicate a a reference Graphically speaking I would like a result similar

substitution of the ASCII character "squared" AKA "^2" AKA (alt+0178) with a tractable one
Deae R helpers, the problem I'm facing today is related to the manipulation of a string. The string is coming from a a porosimeter, whose control is under a complicate set-up of two computers One (running on DOS) is controlling directly the hardware, while the other (running on win XP) which process the data is connected to the first one via serial. I get the data from this last computer.

Managing Data [Summary]
...nvolves keeping raw data in separate files, each with a name (supposedly a useful mnemonic), such as cba1.data, and scripts in other separate files, such as cba1.R." A script is written to read, transform, manipulate, and analyze data. Jim Lemon uses a similar approach but adds "Just to forestall any confusion, I noticed that [Jon Baron] didn't mention using read.table() or scan() in the *.R file of commands to read in the data each time the script is run. That way you never trash your data, and any data edits you do outside of R are reflected in the next run of the script." 3. D...

Suggest changing dirhash defaults for FreeBSD 9.2.
I have been experimenting with dirhash settings, and have scoured the internet for other peoples' experience with it. (I found the performance improvement in compiling has forestalled the need to add an SSD drive. ;-) I believe that increasing the following values by 10 would benefit most FreeBSD users without disadvantage. vfs.ufs.dirhash_maxmem: 2097152 to 20971520 vfs.ufs.dirhash_reclaimage: 5 to 50 or 60 FreeBSD administrators who have adjusted vfs.ufs.dirhash_maxmem...

powercom upstype identify problem
...not dare do that. And concerning the UPS shutdown, if it is at all necessary to me, and if I ever decide to configure my system for UPS shutdown: I want the UPS itself to shut down right after the system has sucessfully gone through the standard shutdown procedure. I do not want the UPS shutdown to forestall the system shutdown. This was the case with the original upsmon programme, coming with my UPS. Concisely, I am asking two things: 1.Criteria for the correct driver and upstype configuration; some example algorithm to perform the tests; some quck commands for starting the driver from the command li...

Patterning for fills
I have coded a preliminary patterning for fills based on the Postscript "paint" function that a couple of R-bies requested. As an attempt to forestall giving them headaches when someone (maybe even me) gets around to coding patterning for the other devices, I have used the most significant byte of the internal color code to hold the pattern code. This does not interfere with solid color specification (as far as I can see with x11(), Ghostview, KD...

[[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Dear R-helpers, the problem I'm facing today is to convince lattice to paint some areas in gray. The areas I would like to have in gray, are confidence bands I've googled around in the mailing list archives and eventually find some clues. This link is my starting point http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/e2/help/07/04/15595.html I'm reproducing here the code for your convenience est
